It's definitely more possible to step back initially without saying much of anything with the older kids for sure, but with my 9th graders they're unfortunately still a bit too immature to run the entire discussion themselves. I typically have to open up myself first to get them going and try to kind of play the roll of cooling heads a little bit. I don't know if that will be a problem tomorrow but with social issues like abortion/race relations/etc, if I don't try to kind of.....present things politely, so to speak, it can get ugly fast with kids that age. They haven't quite learned how to do things like not accuse pro-choice people of wanting to kill babies when they get worked up lol. Or start slipping into slurs and/or dehumanizing language when talknig about gay people, which I still notice a lot of open homophobia among my black students. Not that i blame them, as obviously many adults haven't learned how to speak about these issues either lol

But yeah i def wanna give them time to speak up after I just kind of explain things a bit. I just hope I get some participation, it's tough on zoom sadly.

This should be the first thing investigated by the DOJ in the Biden admin and...boy I'd sure feel a lot better about Doug Jones being the guy to consider doing that instead of Merrick fucking Garland
