My only take on Taylor Swift is that while I have little to no opinion on her music, anytime I encounter a grown adult who specifically identifies as a "Swiftie" or otherwise lists her as an artist so important to them that it's part of their personality or aesthetic, that that is my cue to run. Run for my life, and never look back.

I think she has good songs and bad songs

Sub her out for any other artist and that’s usually the same haha. Adopting a musician as your aesthetic or personality is weird when you’re old like we are!

Oh for sure, yeah, it can go for pretty much any artist! I just often find Taylor Swift is a larger offender (maybe just because she's more popular) up there with Tool and the like (albeit in a different lane). Adult Swifties usually fall into the same lane as Disney Adults and Potterheads who are just an exact opposite type of person I want anything to do with, LOL.

Yeah, that's where I am. Too bland/beige to really form an opinion of any sort on. The fact that you can't get away from her during an album cycle is the only thing that irks me.

I do however hate the "you only hate her/him/them because they're popular" take. It is dumb as hell.

  7. I don’t fuck with a “you only hate Taylor bc she’s popular” take but I definitely think the majority of hate towards her has very little to do with her actual music

  8. Also I think “x is too boring for me to form an opinion on” is often just “I actually hate x but rather than just saying x is not my thing I would like to dish a lil burn”

Agreed. I'm not sure how you can listen and find her music "boring". Not for you, sure. But boring? I don't think the word applies to her.

Probably because everyone looks for different things in music. There's nothing in her music that I look for or that interests me. A good voice? Of course. But nothing else. Therefore, to me, it's boring.

Not really. If you say you hate something then that means you actively dislike it. It’s a pretty strong statement of distaste. Whereas I’d say PauLo and I are clearly saying that we don’t actively dislike her, just that it’s something we wouldn’t really choose to listen to

“It’s not for me because I find it boring” is a totally reasonable thing to say. How can you say it’s fine if it’s not for you, but not if you think it’s boring lol. What are legitimate reasons for not liking something?

Eh I feel like she’s not that special of a singer at all lol. Her biggest draw always seems to be her lyrics, which is probably one of the last things I care about in music (esp in pop music) these days, so it makes sense to me why I’m not really drawn to her the same way others are

  13. I mean you just cannot convince me a person that has has absolutely no opinion on an artist would go out of their way to post this

But you made a generalized statement that amounts to “when someone says X, they often really mean Y.” If you were solely talking about one specific person’s opinion of Taylor Swift, I assume you would have been more narrow lol

  15. Well yeah my statement was meant to be general because I generally feel that way. But also right now the conversation is about a Taylor Swift so I figured that was implied? Haha

I guess there's not point trying to convince you otherwise considering you've already sticking to your assumptions.

It’s just that you seemed to quote his post as like a refutation against my disagreement with your general statement, which it simply isn’t lol. Again, someone (like myself) can totally not have any strong opinion on someone, and not just use it as whatever weird sneak diss you seem to think it is

And tangentially, he definitely said that what irks him is when a new album comes around and she’s inescapable, which doesn’t conflict with the post you quoted!

  18. Man my post says “often”, as in not in every case. If it doesn’t apply to you then that’s fine lol, it doesn’t have to! But if you think calling an artist “too bland to hate” cannot possibly be construed as some very intentional shade then idk what to tell you — especially in this case, where we’re talking about arguably the most prominent musician on the planet

And yes I used that quote against your disagreement bc you specifically name dropped that poster, who had previously said they also had “no opinion” on her

I don’t think there’s any “shade” though lol. It’s a very clear, straightforward criticism that you seem to interpret as a *different kind* of criticism. That is what I think is bizarre

  21. Yeah. I mean we can just disagree and that’s fine haha. I think you’re putting a lot of stock into how straightforward people people generally are when there’s an opportunity to be snarky or sarcastic — again, especially in this specific scenario, where we’re talking about a massive and fairly polarizing musician on a music site with a user base that is typically very capable of forming opinions on things

This is getting into repetitive territory so I’ll drop it

I don't know any big swift fans irl. People either say she's annoying which seems like a leftover disdain after the hugely everywhere 1989 era and kanye scandal, or ppl where I live whine about how she switched from country

I feel super out of touch with what my kids I work with listen to. I was surprised last night when a teen had me put on avril lavigne. She rly liked the hello kitty song. A lot of my kids like imagine dragons too. And I think like 21 pilots and any song that blows up on tiktok.

used to date a huge swift fan. haven’t kept in touch with her obviously but she was bud into 1989. since she hated when i’d listen to the national, i can only assume her feelings in this album

my wife loves the national and the last few albums. right choices in life.

Maybe t swift helped her crossover more into the national! I think that's what I'm most excited for about her recent collabs. If it gets people to check out other artists I'm super hyped for that.
