I confuse the KNY songs with “G” titles often. Gauze, Goon Squad, and Graphic Nature. I like them all a fair amount but I will say those are all probably among, if not my least faves on the album. they feel a little less “all there” than the rest of the album, even if they have some of my fav individual moments (the groove and dissonant guitar line of Graphic Nature rules, Gauze has some seriously pummeling riffing, and the way Rosemary and Goon Squad transition into one other is seriously awe-inspiring). it’s an interesting coincidence lol. that said, I have a hard time picking favorites between the entire rest of the album so it’s hard to fault it for having some glaringly weaker (imo) songs. my gut says Rosemary is my overall pick from the record, but Swerve City!!! Leathers!!! Entombed!!! Romantic Dreams!!! it’s a fucking feast.

excited to dive in to Black Stallion... but does anyone have any idea if the album proper has received some kind of remaster for the 20th anniversary?

Yeah I loved that segment and completely forgot Chino featured on one of his solo releases.

listening through White Pony in preparation for Black Stallion tomorrow, and I wonder if there will ever be a time when I'm not absolutely floored by Knife Prty.

EDIT: Alright anytime we're talking about song runs through their discog, y'all remind me of this: how is Knife Prty, Korea, Passenger, and Change even a thing? Myyyyyy word this band is special.

EDIT 2: Passenger is a masterclass of only repeating a chorus twice and leave people wanting more in the best way possible.

  8. You get it. An absolute fucking face-melter of a song.

I think it's the same remaster that came out unannounced the same day Gore was released. It's got the same sample voice part at 5:51 on Pink Maggit and the extra vocal line from Chino towards the end of Passenger.

One thing I noticed listening to these albums all at once essentially: there’s not nearly the neat lines of demarcation to my ear that I read people talking about in here.

Maybe I’m oversimplifying, but if I listen to S/T and then White Pony and then Diamond Eyes, I don’t hear a ton of variation record to record. Song to song? Of course. But they’re all Deftones records. And the songs are all really good. I’m sure if I was around for years waiting for each album and all that, I’d hear it more, but after Adrenaline and until Gore, I don’t hear huge sonic differences album to album, and I have a hard time remembering which song is from which album when I make a playlist or sometimes even what album I put on. It’s all just so consistently great.

I like that you could tell it was Blanck Mass within three seconds.

Phantogram nailed the Street Carp remix. Exactly the sort of shift I want - completely changed the vibe but still recognisably the same song. Sounds beautiful.

they all sound like p distinctly different albums to me. like, they sound like the same band, yeah, but each album has its own specific identity to me probably largely due to production, and I would guess general influences of the band members’ from album to album, but also bc Frank is fucking amazing at developing an atmospheric palette for each album that helps really set the tone for the songs and albums as a whole. I think he’s an incredibly underrated/likely under-listened to element of this band’s make-up. I probably felt similarly when I was first getting into them and I was indulging in it all at once but after a decade plus of listening, they’ve all really established their own identities and have been attached to different memories as well to me. and each new album kinda changes my relationship to the ones before in a weird way. like now that the dust has settled on Gore, and Ohms is out, I am starting to accept it more for what it is now and appreciate it a lot more and even hear things I missed in it.

also, Black Stallion is cool. gonna probably take me a few listens to adjust to just how different it all is, but I was still fully engaged with it the whole time so that says something. the Change remix is probably my favorite. it’s serene.

Korea remix isn't recognisable at all haha. I dig it but it's used a few stray hairs from the original.

I still like the Passenger remix up until the chorus, which I think butchers the whole song.

  16. Tourist absolutely smashed it. I've been a fan of William's stuff for years and to see him on a fucking Deftones remix album of all places is insane. So, so proud of him.

  20. I've listened to White Pony hundreds of times, but "Korea" is still so fucking intense.

Also so many haunting and gorgeous moments on the back half of Diamond Eyes. Chorus of "Risk," verses of "976-EVIL." Fuck.

As someone whose stylistic tastes and background suggest KNY should be my favorite, I like it a lot, but it somehow feels like many of the songs aren't fully formed... even beyond the ones you listed. Swerve and Romantic, right off the bat. Great riffs, great vibe, but somehow not great songs. Entombed similar. Rosemary is the huge exception and runs away with the crown in my book.

  22. Gotta disagree there, at least about "Swerve City" and "Entombed." Great tracks that really show off the versatility of not only that record, but the band as a whole.

But the rest of Black Stallion is pretty cool.
