If I could just forget it

Everyone latches onto a different album with this band and that's partly why they are so great.

Yeah, some serious first world problems we are having here with such a wonderfully consistent band!

All their albums are good and that's great. There are songs that are like all timers for me on every one. In my experience this site has a much higher percentage of Koi No Yokan stans than most of their fanbase.

This is it for me, I think. Still not sure where Ohms goes.

    White Pony
    Deftones
    Saturday Night Wrist
    Around the Fur
    Ohms
    Diamond Eyes
    Koi No Yokan
    Gore
    Adrenaline

diamond eyes doesn’t sound safe or mainstream to me at all, at least compared to other deftones albums. some of the time signature trickery from saturday night wrist is even carried over and made more intense

i also think of the last three tracks as a suite for chi and think it’s the best part of the whole catalog

album always lands in the middle of my rankings regardless

the thing is when diamond eyes came out *i* thought it was too safe myself, and i have realized since that i was wrong. it’s certainly more refined than snw and the s/t but that’s one of the amazing things about it

I feel like KNY does everything that DE was trying to do, but better, but I've learned since frequenting this thread that I am in the minority with that. Swerve City, Leathers, Poltergeist, Entombed, and Rosemary would probably all be in my top 15 favorite songs by them.

it’s been p much the reverse for me. loved it when it dropped (it was my first album cycle as a fan) and have progressively liked it less and found it to be a very reigned in album more over time. I think Ohms has been, for me, what Diamond Eyes is/was for a lot of people.

this band has been 90% of what I have listened to these past few months though, since before Ohms even dropped, I love them to death and ultimately have love for all their records but some naturally engage me more than others.

edit: I also think whereas their albums generally really lurk in these dark, murky, and just overall kinda ominous atmospheres, DE on the whole feels v bright, hopeful/optimistic, and just generally lighter by comparison. I think it is definitely the album they needed to make after Chi’s accident. I’m glad it exists and is something different, and I can understand and appreciate why it works for so many people, but that’s just not really where my headspace is at when I am binging this band’s music. when listening to their albums back to back, it really makes it feel almost toothless (more describing its impact on me than its actual sonic qualities) compared to what it’s surrounded by.

Love these debates they always make me revisit an album for the first time in a while. I don't know that I can even choose between Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan.

Oh I know the answer. Whichever one I am currently listening to is better. So for the time being that is KNY.

    Leathers, people. Fucking Leathers.

when they released Leathers as a pre-release single before the album came out I lost my absolute shit

Yep - I was going to mention that too but I wasn't sure if my memory was failing me or not, so thank you for confirming it was the first track released.

THIS IS! YOUR CHANCE! REVOLT! RESIST!

I'm fairly sure if my old car stereo speakers weren't already blown out, they were after I drove around for weeks blasting that track.

i also agree 100 percent with this, somehow, despite really going to bat for diamond eyes a few hours ago

  21. Definitely consider KNY to be a sister record to Diamond Eyes for whatever reason. It's top five for sure, I just think it's a little less tight and I recall/recognize less of the tracks than the 10 on Diamond Eyes, which is just...all killer no filler in my eyes. Not that I think there's filler on KNY either, lol.

    This band rules.
