The people saying we shouldn’t say defund the police are also saying we should give the police more funding to correct their problems so they are not trying to solve the issue in good faith imo. That’s kind of like saying let’s give same sex couples civil unions but not marriage, it helps sure but it still leaves huge problems. What you’re accusing us of doing is actually what is being done to the defund the police movement. They’re criticizing it without addressing the substance.

They would impeach him but not convict? Would be a weird strategy to take. If they remove him then Kamala would be next in line. Think endless “incriminating” investigations is more likely

What teacher unions protect predators? What are these cases of teachers molesting kids where the teacher goes unpunished? What world is this guy living in

So I know you guys are all in on saying the dems are going to sell us out for a bipartisan deal that’s inadequate. And obviously I agree it’s severely inadequate, it sucks and is missing some key things. But what can you do at this point? First we don’t even know if it will have the votes in the senate, and second, we’ve have dealing with nothing for months, we can’t simply sit by while McConnell let’s people continue to struggle and businesses continue to close.

Why not take the deal and promise that if dems end up with the senate they will be passing another much better bill than this. I genuinely want to know at this point what you think dems can do other than continue to propose things that the other side will never agree to and just cause this country to keep suffering.

It would just be about giving him the "stain of impeachment" like Trump got, plus it would be an enormous distraction not just for the Biden White House but for the press as well. It'll dominate the conversation and nothing Biden actually manages to get done in that time via executive order will be able to break through. And they'll ride that media shitstorm right into 2024.

I’d like to know what all is in it first of all. I know it has a provision that restricts liability on business that open during covid. That alone could be a reason to reject it without enough good things. Is there going to be another loan system that these republican’s rich corporate friends take advantage of? I still don’t know if it contains a moratorium on evictions. I honestly don’t even know if it’s worth caving on or not but it’s still pretty pathetic to call it bipartisan. If they vote for it they should make it clear it’s not bipartisan but that something is better than nothing, if it even is better than nothing.
But if you call it bipartisan and it sucks both parties need to own that it sucks.

And the implication that it’s simply the poor training that results in police abuses, and not the fact that they know their asses are covered

Yeah I mean, that’s basically my point that something is better than nothing at this point. I know some people are saying no stimulus check is a non starter, and obviously we need stimulus checks, but the fact is that we can’t go much longer of just doing literally nothing if we don’t want thousands of more businesses to go under and have millions of more people financially broke. Obviously we have to see what’s actually in this, but if it’s better than nothing then I say dems should say it sucks but still vote for it and vow to pass something way better if they get the senate.

For a lot of people, this "bipartisan" bill isn't going to provide any real assistance at all if it doesn't have stimulus checks. And if it gets passed, the can will have effectively been kicked down the road another time, so all of those people will continue to suffer anyway for another several months with no assistance. Don't give the Republicans a chance to say they "did something" and so don't have to do anything else for a while. Passing that bill makes it less likely another better bill will be passed soon thereafter, not more.

The unemployment boost would be great for a lot of people obviously. But the liability waiver is a big deal. Imagine someone gets covid from the negligence of a business or their employer, spends days or weeks in the hospital and then can’t sue to recover their damages. I imagine there will be thousands if not tens of thousands of people like that who will be drowning in debt and can’t recover anything from an irresponsible business.
Ultimately maybe they can get enough good things or remove that liability waiver but yeah it definitely looks questionable whether it’s worth passing right now to me.

So far, all I’ve seen from the package is that it’s better than nothing but still like taking a handful of aspirin for a gunshot wound.

I'd feel much better about the deal if it wasn't just PPP pt. 2 because the first PPP just ended up being a slush fund for big companies and I've heard way too many stories of small companies who uhh definitely didn't use it right.

Most government "aid" goes to resource holders who would like to put less effort into retaining their wealth. After all, they "earned it" far more than the hundreds of millions of people who actually desperately require aid

This is why capitalism just works

I wish I could identify a company who didn’t use it correctly. I truly wish I could think of one, maybe in the hockey retail industry, who furloughed a quarter their office, laid the other quarter off, laid off 25% of their retail workforce and pocketed the PPP. Golly wish I could think of one. Maybe they’d be name something like Sure Dockey or something like that.

I know of two examples personally myself. The restaurant my aunt works at definitely did NOT use the PPP funds it got to keep people on the payroll....i'll just say that.
