Dumb question about student loan forgiveness, but it seems like everyone frames it as essentially a one-time occurrence. What would happen with people who take out student loans after? Is there some implied “student loan forgiveness also means free public college” or something? Because if so then that part def doesn’t come across as obviously implied

banks and lenders would stop offering student loans. then free education legislation would need to be passed at a federal level - which yeah needs to happen.

Aren’t most student loans federal, though? Like, over 90%? I know all of mine are Stafford loans. When so much of the debt is owed to the United States government, I don’t understand what this “lender” talk is supposed to mean.

Private student loans are a huge problem, not all loans are federal since federal loans/grants normally don’t cover the cost of attending especially if you’re a dumb kid wanting to live on campus. Looking back, I cannot fathom why campus housing was so expensive. I have both federal loans and loans through Wells Fargo. The Wells Fargo ones are awful, I’m super lucky my dad is helping pay those off. I have a feeling reforming private loans will be more difficult due to the various lenders having massive lobbying interests.

Don’t cancel my loan. Just have it deferred until I die.

Idk what others' experience has been, but I could only get maybe 1/3 of my loans federally, so I have those government loans with a 3% interest rate, and then hovering around 8% for the rest :-/

But I was an idiot 17 year old with no good concept of money and thought wasting it at an expensive private school for a few semesters was a good idea before transferring out heh

I have over 80k in student loans because big surprise, I was a young college kid who didn't know what I was getting myself into. I'll never pay them off, so I'll live with the weight of them hovering over every financial decision I make for the rest of my life. What's worse is that my mom cosigned, so even if I die the responsibility will pass to her. The pause on payments has obviously helped, and it started coincidentally the same month I got married, so I haven't made a payment at all during my marriage. When they start up again next year, I honestly don't know what I'll do.

My only real hope is that the sun burns us all alive, which seems increasingly likely with every day that passes.

If it’s by executive action it would only be federal loans so yeah it could happen again. If it’s legislative the proposals have been taxes on Wall Street and a wealth tax I believe, which would be used to make public colleges tuition free going forward.

I left mine deferred while I was in school and in the Army not realizing that interest was murdering me. Got up to $50K when I met my girlfriend. She really motivated me to put a dent in them. Paid off about $15K over the last year. It hurts to see that money go to absolutely nothing, but its nice to see the number going down.

Yeah I have about 50k in student loans for a degree my current career has NOTHING to do with. The payments suck, and this pause has been a blessing but I know they’re coming back soon

80% of them are federal loans. Cancel that shit.
