The biggest thing he can do, which will likely also take democrats having the Senate, is to pass a relief bill/stimulus package. This will give more cities and states cover to issue stay-at-home and similar orders, and to shut down certain businesses (like the bars and breweries you're referring to).

He can also do things like work with cities and states to convince them to issue such orders and mask mandates, improve testing (more widely available, more efficient) and have the CDC issue clear and consistent guidance on social distancing and masks.

Right now the Trump administration is, at best, doing absolutely nothing other than talking a big game about controlling the pandemic. In reality, they seem to be actively working to undermine efforts to control the virus and actually increasing its spread.

Is it that lucrative at all for anyone who isn’t already a well established person? I guess Yglesias likely has a large enough following to live off it, but my gut reaction is that it can only ever be slightly supplemental for anyone else. One of the big draws of writing for a paper/site is the wider circulation

While I do agree that the US was always going to be hit very hard by covid-19 - due to all sorts of factors from huge population to our sense of individualism and many more - I think a lot of people are discounting just how truly destructive and damaging it has been to have a president who completely disregards all of the science and flaunts breaking all of the guidelines and rules meant to keep people safe.

Whether we like it or not he is the most powerful person in the country and his words and actions carry so much more weight than the typical person's. It's not just individual people's actions that I am talking about either, but governors and other republican party people in positions of leadership being afraid to be seen taking the virus seriously or doing the right thing either out of fear of pissing off trump or not getting reelected or wherever it is.

I honestly believe the difference can be measured in tens of thousands of deaths if not hundreds of thousands of deaths, and in the millions when it comes to cases. If you look at what a country like Taiwan was able to achieve and how they did it, it's not magic or even rocket science - it is all concepts that we understood to work perfectly before this pandemic hit us and we were perfectly able to implement in our country.

I don't think the US would ever have contained the virus to the level that a country like Taiwan or New Zealand did. But I do believe that a smart and responsible leader could certainly have kept our country safer and in a better spot than 10,582,938+ cases and 242,710+ deaths with our hospitals and ICUs rapidly reaching the point of being overrun and the virus absolutely EXPLODING exponentially all across our country on November 13th, 2020.

Letting trump off the hook for this and just saying "well it was always going to be bad" is absolutely and utterly fucking horseshit and wrong. No single person was in a better position to do more good and help the situation than he was and instead we got "I don't take any responsibility" and "maybe masks are good, maybe masks are bad, who knows? ask a waiter." and here we are facing an absolutely deadly winter that a lot of us and our loved ones will not see the other side of alive and unscathed.

Fuck him. No single person did more harm during this pandemic than donald trump. No single person holds more responsibility for the death and destruction in this country than donald trump whether he admits it or not.

Yes it was always going to bad. It never needed to be this bad. It never should have.
