As a European who speaks the closest thing there is to spanish, including binary language,
I do have to say that concerns about words in spanish having genders seem ridiculous to most native speakers.
The only genuinely unbalanced occasion is when referring to a group including male and female humans, gramatically the male prevails. But native speakers aren't in any way actually disturbed by that or by anything else. It's silly.
My two cents as I perceive it. (Edit: not my opinion re: saying Latinx. I think using X is weird but I'm fine with trying to find a gender neutral term in English for various reasons. I would've gone with Latins).

 

If/when Biden gets Nevada and Michigan, he'll be at exactly 270. And if Trump wins his 4 states that are left, he'll only be at 268. So Biden reeeeeally needs Nevada to pull ahead a bit more for me to feel better about how this is looking to play out.

 

Yeah but it at least seems like the Spanish speaking peoples that live here are also telling you "That's not how Spanish works" and unless people specifically request otherwise, maybe you should just stick to the general consensus of what they want lol

But also people saying that white folks using the word "Latinx" is why a bunch of latino voters came out to vote for Trump are also dumb. Latino voters are just as capable of being fooled by lies in 2020 as WWC voters were in 2016. Socialism, rapists and murderers coming in thanks to open borders, etc.

But doesn't the term originate from latinx people, seeking a gender neutral way to describe themselves? So on the one hand you have people telling you "This is how spanish works to be more inclusive of my gender identity" and on the other hand you have people telling you "This is not how spanish works"

 

The logic goes something like “They tried to rig it, but we still held them back for the most part”

For the GA runoffs, does that benefit the Dem candidates who are motivated to get to 50 senators, over Rs who are deflated by Trump’s loss?

I've heard some peoole say that "Latine" is the gender neutral world in Spanish, but who knows.

 

Anecdotally, I have friends and coworkers of Hispanic descent and none of them use that term. The few times I have used it in conversation, they've kind of guided me away from it. I've also attended smaller shows that explicitly promote themselves as Latinx, and those crowds tend to be filled with more women and people of color (which is dope, as it's not a concert space I'm usually in). As a progressive term, it might be a little ahead of the core electorate, plus there's something harsh-sounding about non-Latinx people using it to describe an ethnic group who may not agree with its necessity.

Putting intersectionality into action can be hard!

 

A few activists maybe but if they're not getting the consensus of their own community, I don't think non-latino speaking people need to force the issue either. Can't just pick and choose certain people to speak for an entire community. That's why no one seriously things Kanye or Lil Wayne speak for the black community haha.

Seems perfectly acceptable in this instance to use the term as it's always been used and use "latinx" if you're discussing in company with someone who prefers to be referred to that way.

 

Biden being down 5 points in PA is still not promising to me but if it goes where folks say it’s headed I will be very happy.
