I'm curious what makes that line sexist. I think it's a childish understanding of what's romantic, but I don't see anything here that puts women in a box.

But yeah complexity and accessibility are not mutually exclusive. Most of my favorite bands are my favorites because they are both of those things.

I don't think accessibility is a bad word in music by any means - but in my own, personal, music worldview, putting too many eggs in the accessibility basket forces you to overlook several other vital components that could make the music really stand out. To me it's easier as a writer to try to be innovative first and then sand off the rough edges until it's a smooth and accessible composition, than to aim for accessibility first and try and find ways to innovate the sound later. They're not mutually exclusive per se, but a heavy focus on accessibility during songwriting imo gives you tunnel vision when it comes to actually developing the song's details, because most popular music is extremely simple and derivative and that's the underlying pressure of trying to intentionally be accessible - not veering off course of the status quo in popular music.

Yeah, their sound is bland. In that style I prefer Mutemath's album Odd Soul.

it's threatening violence, I know it's not at them maybe it's not being sexist exactly but I can imagine it making someone uncomfortable

That line in itself isn't sexist but plenty of lines from that album and many other scene albums direct violence toward women, that doesn't mean they can't be great albums. You can be critical of that aspect and still recognize their importance to your life or the scene as a whole.

I have a few unpopular opinions, but one that jumps out is that I think the music from Limp Bizkit's Significant Other holds up pretty well. Fred is a shithead and has some pretty terrible lyrics, however. Idk, maybe it's mostly nostalgia that I am clinging to, but that simple drum beat to Like This gets my head bopping every time. Part of me is laughing at myself for this, but it's whatever. We aren't perfect.

They were a fairly talented band cursed and blessed with a frontman who is def why they got famous but also just the worst.

"Re-Arranged" is actually one of the more interesting hits, instrumentally, of that genre/era and then Durst is just so damn annoying

I should dust that one off and give it a go again. I remember getting that after SO. I remember watching the NBC Woodstock special and they aired Faith, and wanted to get the album that had it.

I tried going back to the SO follow up, and couldn't do it at all. I still kind of stand behind SO, though.

Yeah like even if that line itself isn't trashing women I feel like it is this weird Nice Guy thing where he's just so nice and would do anything for her and she's not appreciating it blah blah blah and plays into bigger issues. There's def a context there

Well, this is an emotion that can be felt by both genders, the big overarching issue is the scene is dominated by all male bands so the fact that only one side of the story is often represented contributes itself to the misogyny of various punk scenes.

You hear a lot of men saying women in their lives have had questionable motives but while the opposite happens as well, none of that gets promoted as popular music unless it's Paramore and the producer wants/expects to sleep with Hayley Williams. So a lot of impressionable people can hear that and make more songs about why girls are bad or whatever and it's just a bad culture of songwriting.

I also definitely think part of it is guys don't want to come across as weak and wallowing about their personal feelings so they find it empowering to attack the other person instead. Kind of like an extension of male assigned gender roles, trying to act tough and show harsh resistance when emotionally vulnerable. And those attacks seem to range from quippy and elitist (TAYF), to flat out violent and dehumanizing (like Glassjaw we were talking about). It sells and perpetuates sexism and nobody involved realizes it because they all hide behind the excuse of, it's just anecdotal and "Not directed toward all women". Writers need to understand that it is directed toward all women collectively through a whole scene of bitter tattooed men slandering women and blaming relationship troubles on their "nature", album by album.

Reading threads like this makes me feel like I don't listen to enough music or at least enough variety with how well-known around here so many bands are that I have either only heard the names of, heard single tracks, or have never heard of before, hahahaha.

idk if this really counts as an unpopular opinion but i'm pretty over pop punk coming back, either in the form of the classics get radio time or the genre resurfacing. i love enema of the state, but i don't need to hear every song from it twice every day man
