This is a geniune accomplishment. Surprised you'd never heard several of these, but especially Neutral Milk Hotel. What did you think? I don't see that album mentioned a ton around here but I could imagine a LOT of users absolutely loving it.

Lol fuck off, dork, I wasn’t saying it was a bad thing, just impressive/surprising how big of an impact she had

2 Weezer albums, specifically Blue and Pink, being the “gotcha” there is crazy, haha. I have a Hotelier album from 2016 and an Earl Sweatshirt album from 2018 if you want to argue about recency bias

I had listened to it like 10-11 years ago and wasn’t into it by I always suspected I might come around eventually so I revisited. I really enjoyed it. The fuzzy lo-fi used to be one of my issues with it but this time around I could really hear the analog care that was put into it to get those sounds and it made a difference.

I have two 2020 albums on my list, but I think that’s a product of 2020 being a massive garbage dump of a year and me ultimately leaning on music to get through it in a way I haven’t since my more formative years.

It makes a lot of sense that formative albums dominate people’s lists. But @cshadows2887 is right, never too late to explore!

Was just looking at my list and I think the latest album I have is from either 2010 or 2011. I always do my best to avoid recency bias. There have been so many albums over the years that i've played the shit out of, thought it was the best thing i've ever heard and yet when I go back to it 2 or 3 years later, I wonder why I loved it so much at the time.

When we do the hip hop classics threads (PLUG!), we don't choose albums released within the past 10 years as our reasoning is that a classic needs a good 10 years to bed in before it can be considered a classic. I tend to think the same when it comes to favourite albums.

I edited it from saying it was "crazy" to "impressive/surprising" just because I keep overusing the word, haha. You're a strange bird!

Musics weird for me in terms of entertainment as its harder and harder for new stuff to come anywhere close to my all time favourites. I think there's like 1 or 2 on my last from the last five years.

Whereas I've had a ton of additions to my top films of all time list over the last few years.

Anyway, to clarify even more so that there aren't any more weird attempts to "get" me now that I'm actually awake, it's dope that Phoebe is on that many lists! Truly impressive! My point was more that she has had such an impact in 3 years than most artists will in a lifetime.

I never really got into her growing up, and my uncle who loves music would always say to me with certainty “don’t worry, everybody has a Joni phase.” The first time I heard Hejira it was like something new was poured into me.

My dad tried multiple times while I was growing up to get me into her and while I always appreciated her, I couldn’t really connect personally. Then all of a sudden in my mid 20s she was just magic.

I care more about people touting things as "classics" immediately, especially if they are not well versed in the other staples of the genre. As I've said a million times before, it's weird for so many publications or people who don't listen to hip hop to jump on an album like GKMC or MBDTF without really understanding their place within the genre.

A list like this, that doesn't really matter.

again, please point out a single instance of anyone *complaining* about it.

do you really not know what the words “surprising” and “wild” mean? you’re doing a pretty awful job at whatever bit this is.

I listened to Clarity last night for the first time thanks to this thread. Very cool album! Was NOT what I was expecting. I’ve only ever listened to Bleed American before, which I enjoyed, but damn. Doesn’t have the range that this one does. This thing really ends with a 16 minute track?? Idk, it reminded me of something like coheed’s Second Stage Turbine Blade, which is not what I was expecting whatsoever based on my (limited) knowledge of this band.

Happy and a bit surprised to see Sigur Rós on a fair amount of lists. First time I heard Takk..., I was so overwhelmed by its otherworldly beauty, I’d never heard anything like it before.

why would i bother doing that when they flew off the top rope with some weird passive aggressive shit about my own list choices lol

i like the ep a lot. it’s very good. there’s a pretty good shot that punisher ends up being my aoty. keep doubling down though, it’s a great look!
