  1. Cause that’s the answer to the question.

Could you maybe explain why, then?

    Big ask, I know.

  4. Cause the vast majority of people buying an iOS device have both already, and don’t need extras.

I think the split between first-time iPhone buyers and upgraders leans heavily in favor of upgraders, who already have chargers and headphones

If someone doesn't have a proper charger or headphones, how much is Apple charging them to get them when they order a new phone? Isn't official Apple equipment like that rather pricey?

The "reduce carbon footprint" seems to me to pretty clearly be corporate propaganda. Apple wants to sneak in a price increase, and is using the carbon footprint thing as a distraction.

  8. 20 bucks but that cost was built into the phone before as well.

I never use the charger that I get with my phone most of the time. They’re so fragile and unreliable. Same goes for the headphones. I use my Bluetooth headphones that are better than what Apple has to offer.

Pretty sure the chargers require a different type of USB port, so everyone’s cord that will ship with the phone will not work, so they will need to buy a new charger if they want to use the cable that comes with the phone. Otherwise they will have to stick with the slower charging current charger/cord. So they technically won’t have to, but they will.

Jason is incorrect (shocking, I know)

Usb C to lightning is the correct cord to include. If you already had a charger from any phone from like less than 8 years ago it’ll work.

Please argue with me about tech and call me incorrect. Please.

Right. But while on paper you're just going from a $699 iPhone 11 to a $799 iPhone 12, because the 11 included the headphones and the charger its really more like a $140 increase.

It can't actually cost apple that much to make the charger or the headphones. If this was actually about reducing the carbon footprint and not just a cost saving measure they would sell the complete phone for $799 with the accessories shipped in a second box. Then when ordering, let people choose either to get a $20 rebate on future Apple purchases, donate $20 to an environmentalism charity, or get the full phone with headphones and charger.

  15. It’s 38 bucks at best, if you ignore any inflation. (And the cost of new tech in the phone.)

what? even the iPhone 11 I got included lighting port to USB A, not C

I have a bunch of USB power adapters. All of them use USB A. Even the USB C phones I've used still had USB A power adapters and then a USB A to USB C cord.

Which devices have actually shipped with a USB C power adapter?

  17. Those adapters still work with the new phone. The usb end is irrelevant. Keep using your A to Lightning cable and adapter. It’ll work perfectly. There are billions of them out there in closets.

So why is "Usb C to lightning is the correct cord to include" if most people can't even use it? If you really want to reduce waste, why include it at all? Instead of letting people have working spare charger that they can still probably use (never hurts to have another charger lying around the house) you've now given a bunch of people a cable which to them is completely useless, which kinda undermines the whole "its about reducing tech clutter and reducing the carbon footprint" thing.

  19. Because most people have one already that works.

And to move to the next stage (a usb c world) giving them that cord for the future and what their computers now use is how to move that forward and future proof their new cord for their computers and cars and hotels etc.

Alright. But given how most people don't have a USB C charger, why not further accelerate the move to the next stage and give them the charger as well? That way, they'll actually have something they can use instead of something they throw in the junk draw and forget about while they continue to use USB A

  21. For the reasons they said: it’s waste (and cost) that people don’t actually need right now.

People should keep using usb a while they have a billion of them.

This is dumb. If having a USB C charger is a waste and a cost that people don't actually need right now, then having a USB C to Lighting Port cable is a waste and a cost that people don't actually need right now.

  24. Not true at all. It’s how you move from one technology to the next as it becomes the new standard; because every thing is now going to be C, (or Qi) everywhere.

  25. Thoughts and Observations on Apple’s ‘Hi, Speed’ iPhone 12 Event
I’m unequivocally in favor of no longer including headphones in the box. The move away from including power adapters is a little iffier, but I think it’s right. I think of it this way: they were never “free”. Whatever the price for the iPhone was, that price included the cost of the bundled power adapter. So if they’re included in the box, you might be (and in my case, personally, often were) paying for a power adapter and headphones you neither want nor need. And Apple has lowered the prices on their own peripherals: their Lightning earbuds and 20W power adapter (which replaces the 18W adapter they included with iPhone Pros last year) are each $19; they used to cost $29.
The basic way to look at it.
