So I stopped and grabbed a soda at our local bar/restaurant just now. It is also my township's only polling location. The only people in there were the bartender, my dad, and myself. The phone rang and it was the county election people asking if they could come set up the voting equipment the Friday beforehand (like usual). She was like "um im sorry but thats our lunch hour so no"(Mind you, this place has NOT been busy) The bartender then looked at my Dad, said "what day of the week is the election on?" and he replied. She told the lady "we're closed on Tuesdays now so you're going to have to figure something else out"....ummm what??

My FIL is the township supervisor here. They are in the process of building a new building but it wasn't going to be complete until after the election so they weren't comfortable having it there and planned to still have the election at the bar for the last time. I have an appointment tomorrow in the town where our early voting place is, I think I'll be voting tomorrow instead.

It's worse than Pawnee. If you guys only knew about the chicken battle several years ago.

 

It was illegal for years (im talking since early 90s) to have any kind of farm animals in town because someone had a goat and the neighbor constantly complained to the village. So a few years ago, they really cracked down on the 3 families (lol) that had chickens in their yard, one of them being a board member. The 2 other families gave up and got rid of the chickens except the board member because he claimed he was grandfathered in (he wasnt). There was literally TWO court cases about this. Numerous newspaper articles in numerous local papers. One interview he did he said "someone choked my chicken. I will find out who the chicken choker is" so that just made it a huge joke. The board eventually caved and now have a strict ordinance allowing just chickens. They really just had an issue with that board member. He lives in what was our only gas station (closed in the late 90s due to lack of business lol) and its basically a junk yard in the center of our town. The chickens live in a small fenced in portion of the lot surrounded by garbage.

So yes, welcome to Pawnee, IL

Edit: i did not realize there was a REAL Pawnee IL. I do not live there haha.

 

The real question is why do you guys have numerous local papers.

 

Theres 3 towns around us that have their own. 2 are released every day and the super small mailer is released once a week

 

when I was a newspaper reporter in rural CT, the company I worked for put out weekly papers for each small town in the area, including those in neighboring Massachusetts, and a lot of the same articles would appear in different papers

 

having lived in all three, rural illinois is nowhere near as bad as rural indiana or iowa

rural wisconsin is where it’s at though

 

Well, my sister got an internal memo saying that the school she works at is going from hybrid to full remote through the end of the month. Canceled sports and PSATS

Their reasoning is a little weird - it's because some fully remote students tested positive due to not social distancing. No known exposure to students who attend in-person. I think reopening in the first place was ignorant and dumb, regardless, though.

 

Yeah we have something similar too. So theres a "Town A" version of the paper and a "Town B" version owned by the same company. I just was counting them as 1. We're in a weird location so theres bigger towns around us that have their own.
