This tropical house thing annoys me cause tropical is like a legit genre made by Latinos and afro-Latinos and others that has been turned into some other genre made by not those ppl that I don't really understand.

i mean madeon was already mentioned. but there's stuff like duck sauce and bob moses as well. idk if Katy B is considered EDM? the latest record was very good. uhhh, I enjoy Paul van Dyk cause every album of his sounds different from another, and he got me to explore the genre in the first place. i've heard good things about hardwell. there's bonobo. burial. there's all kinds of the genre really. i think when people think of EDM they just think of the "generic popular stuff" and there's just waaaay more than that.

When I first heard the term, I was hoping it would be awesome like tropicalia. It was much less so.

Saves The Day - In Reverie

It's one of my all time favorite albums. Number three in my Top 5.

Yellowcard's Lights and Sounds is also a favorite of mine. Always spin that.

Haven't really had much experience with EDM but I do love Bonobo. Theyre really smooth and creative with their samples. Im sure ive heard a bunch of EDM artists by accident and wasnt sure how to classify them.

Can someone help describe the genre to me, I mean is most of it cutting and pasting samples to make a sort of audio collage like Bonobo does? What makes something stop being EDM and start being closer to techno or Electronica? I'm lost halp

EDM is electronic dance music, that encapsulates so much

Someone on Twitter had an interesting point the other day, re: In Reverie. It's Saves The Day's version of Pinkerton...without people revisiting it and falling in love with it after release.

    ^^^ this.

The Flaming Lips "gimmick" is having extremely unique and boundary pushing production, which I think is a good thing. Makes the music especially great when you're on some mild drugs, kinda gives them a niche and a specific "mood" that helps them standout.

While they rely on that more than the songwriting on some records, I don't think that's true for the majority of their discography.

I'm not gonna say point blank they're a more talented band, several great musicians in both bands. But I will say they've broken more ground than Arcade Fire and probably will have a stronger influence on music long term. Arcade Fire is at times almost like a classic relic of Renaissance music mixed with indie rock, but thats not a stylistic revival I would expect many bands to adopt. Meanwhile I've always seen the Flaming Lips as embracing studio technology and having very forward looking recording strategies, while psychedelic music still has a pretty big place in the alternative rock sphere. Long story short I think the Flaming Lips are more relevant to the direction music is heading.

Happens to basically every world genre ever that white westerners get their hands on haha.

In Reverie is underrated in their discog. Aged better than TBC, will take it over SWYA

Agree with the first part, but I think TBC has aged just fine and will still take SWYA over any other STD album.

edm is generally used colloquially to mean big, booming electronic music. its usually a mutation of pop music. think calvin harris, david guetta, avicii, zedd, etc. It encompasses more but generally thats how people mean it, it's the kind of thing that is often viewed as artless or tasteless or otherwise over the top.

artists like bonobo, burial, etc dont really fit in that genre. burial, for instance, works closer to things like dubstep or garage. its like pointing to nickelback and godspeed you black emperor and saying theyre the same genre despite being entire universes apart. everything has it's place and purpose, but i would never call something like burial EDM, just because its such a specific type of approach
