still always going to be insane to me that JJ had five years of publicly known end dates for these movies and dude just never had a plan. awful

To be fair after he finished TFA he probably didn’t think he would have to continue a story. Especially a story that he started was shifted into a different direction in the 2nd film.

IMDb credits 4 people for writing TROS - including Treverrow so idk if that’s bogus or not. did JJ get involved with TROS late or not?

It had to be Kennedy’s idea as well. Highly doubt they would have asked JJ to return unless they both sought to follow TLJ. Only blaming JJ is naive.

JJ didn’t get involved until fall of 2017, after Disney and Lucasfilm fired Trevorrow. Most of TROS was re-written by Abrams and Chris Terrio, but of course everything they chose to do had to be approved by Kathleen Kennedy. Who knows who’s idea was what for most of what happened.

kennedy is at fault too, for sure. end of the day, JJ is the one at the helm of the movie though. and he, and the cast more recently, have talked about him making the movie as he went and coming up with the plot on set. when you have a deadline set 5 years in the making (I get he didn't do TLJ but he started and ended the trilogy lol cmon), and that's what you come up with .... not great, bob

JJ is a boring, middle of the road director. Some of his movies are just fine, but none of them are truly great. Not surprised he blew TROS.

The 5 year doesn’t matter because he wasn’t hired on to do TROS until half a year before production began. JJ probably thought he was done with Star Wars after TFA.

I’m not a big fan of Abrams myself, I only like TFA and the first Star Trek he made.

They were shit decisions made in the service of a shit movie lol

I agree they were dumb decisions. TROS isn’t good. I haven’t liked a Star Wars film since rogue one.

perusing IMDB and JJ really hasnt directed many movies, or episodes of his shows for that matter. way less than I thought. weird.

his only non already existing IP direct, Super 8, got some praise but I really didn’t get the big deal back then save for giving the world the phenomenal Elle Fanning

he was announced as a producer on all three before the trilogy even began lol. you are remembering incorrectly. even if he initially was supposed to only direct the first, he was very much so involved in the decision making process of the entire trilogy since the beginning.

As far as story goes, no, he wasn’t. He was an executive producer for TLJ and that was it. Trevorrow was even hired to direct TROS for 2 years and wrote a script for it without JJ before he was fired. Inbetween 2015 and 2017, JJ did nothing for the trilogy story wise except send notes to Rian, which were supposedly tossed to the side.

I mean, doesn't all this shit lay at Kennedy's feet? She was the one overseeing this all, and you only need to look down the hallway to Feige's office to see how a cinematic universe *should* be planned.

What are you trying to prove? That Abrams did have an idea where to take the films before episode 8 was made? Because yeah I’ve been saying that...

Abrams plans were derailed until they hired him back on for TROS. Saying Abrams had years to make TROS makes no sense at all.

i said he didn't have a plan *for these movies.* I didn't say he had years to make the movie. he was hired to shepherd the entire trilogy. that is inarguable lol, unless you enjoy ignoring direct quotes and facts.

in my opinion it really is Kennedy's fault more than anyone else at the end of the day (for the record I'm not a fan of Abrams and he is to blame as well). I think she is a hell of a producer but at the end of the day she just isn't a right fit for Lucasfilm. In an ideal world I'd like Filoni or someone with that level of passion for the franchise to take over.
