    Julien Baker's s/t

(tbh at this point debating their merits is beyond nitpicking subjectivity but of course i bite)

i think i already said this, but i can't do Sufjan Steven if it's not super stripped down a la C+L or John Wayne Gacy Jr. it's just too overwhelming without being emotive for me

There are few albums I remember listening to for the first time as vividly as when I listened to Adz, it was like the world was suddenly widescreen

Ya there's some Sufjan stuff I can't into but Carrie and Lowell is great. I think it's better than Julien Baker's s/t but that's not weighing in the fact that her s/t was her debut -- Sufjan has been doing this for a decade. Not to say it's because he's more experienced, but he's just had more time to play around and put out a ton of more material than she. But I'd agree it's basically subjective at this point because both are fuckin great.

as far as masturbatory guitar solos go, masturbation feels good so props to them. really though it's like everything else, there are good and bad solos -- I wouldn't write them off completely. I agree that technical wankery doesn't mean much if you can't write a good song though, but it's damn impressive when it comes together well, Tosin Abasi for example.

    Tosin Abasi is a god

Also I can't hear any of you over the sound of the solos in Ride the Lightning

Would like to point out that while guitar wankery does exist and is annoying, not all instances of a guitarist using their speed/chops to create a part is wankery just cause it's fast and there's a lot of notes. It is possible to be emotive and technical simultaneously, and I would argue in certain instances the technique helps further the emotion involved.

Not that anyone's said otherwise. Just feel like I see people often equate any guitar part that isn't simple with wankery.

    All music is wankery tbh

definitely wouldn't listen to a future record over a beatles record... it gets old so fast he has to release a new mixtape every six months lol

the beatles released like 4 ground breaking albums in terms of production, arrangement, and concept 4 years in a row, pretty much no one has done that since. I don't really listen to them ever but I can at least appreciate that.

I like future and all that, but he just kept on releasing mixtapes and albums with end. It's good to take break between releases instead of burning your sound out.

why does he do that then?

genuinely asking, always felt super weird these guys are dropping songs left and right with 3+ projects a year. Always felt like the shotgun approach... just releasing a ton of music and hoping that one of the songs hits? just seems like a great way to release a lot of filler and to make people really start tuning out.. like oh another young thug mixtape in a couple of days, well he already released 2 this year and has like 4 announced so why should I care about this one in particular? idk...

Like I like a lot of future songs and young thug but this is just why I could never call them my favorites because they're so content just releasing completely lackluster mixtapes and albums so it doesn't really feel like they have a very strong vision and are just waiting for the next batch of trap beats to come in

people say reviews don't matter but i totally avoid listening to an album if it's got like a 50/100 on metacritic.
