If we are going of YouTube vids as the basis of fact then fucking Q is real.

this is disingenuous. Some of the best content is on YouTube, see Contrapoints. I wouldn't discount Natalie's content because it's on there.

I discount YouTube and Facebook because they refuse to pull down this batshit conspiracy that is infecting numerous people daily by allowing those videos to be on their platform and pushed by their algorithm.

Edit: It can have good content on it but when their algorithms very deliberately push people towards the batshit stuff, I just have a problem.

that makes 0 sense but go off

just like every other platform YouTube has good stuff on it as well as very bad awful stuff. at the end of the day it's up to each individual to discern what they choose to believe/consume.

now the algorithms is a whole other story.

Yeah I don’t think it’s disingenuous to say YouTube isn’t a good place to source information. It does seem to be filled with right wing bullshit and it does seem to steer you towards that. There are of course some good channels but starting and ending there is probably not going to have you end up in a good place.

the "steering towards" part is the problem. I mean TV isn't bad in general because Fox News exists.

Should have added my edit sorry. For as much good content is on those platforms, I have a hard time with those platforms when it’s so obvious their algorithms push people towards the batshit conspiracies. I understand there is good content on there but when it’s lost in the background to this kind of thing it’s just hard to justify.

If I watch CNN, my tv doesn’t auto play FoxNews. YouTube is a different beast entirely.

at the end of the day I do think you have to be susceptible to that bullshit, I don't think the problem starts with YouTube, the problem starts with the lack of intellect and critical thinking in individuals due to bad education.

I agree, but I feel like we're muddying the waters here. TheGuyfkaFringeofLunacy's first post was that a YouTube video can't be trusted essentially, to which I said that's not inherently true.

YouTube as a site is evil for sure tho.

For me it’s just...imagine still believing the YouTube comments section is a majority representative of anything in the year 2020. Phew.

  12. And I’d argue using CNN as a source to learn is not super great too. The problem with so many of the video services is that they work well to grab little bite sized nuggets of a bunch of longer sourced items, to tell a narrative, but the primary sources are always going to be better and more unbiased ways to explore the underlying research or information. The personality driven portion of YouTube, which every creator will tell you is needed with clickbait titles and graphics to appease the algorithm make it a great way to introduce people to things that they should then research into other avenues once interest is piqued. A lecture isn’t the same as reading the books watching the lecture talking to people and reading some primary sources, etc, etc. We aren’t good at teaching “how to learn” it seems. Leads to “I saw it on YouTube or fox or cnn” being the end all in “debates.”

I don’t think we are either far off from the same idea. I just think relying solely on YouTube as a source is iffy.

The article Jason posted about people “pilling” themselves was a red flag. Even more so with what is going on today.

To the first part though, I don’t think that makes it not YouTube’s fault. What I mean is that some white person in rural America simply doesn’t get the kind of experience that would make them auto reject the crowders or shapiros bullshit. The cops in their town arrest white people (because there isn’t a significant minority population) so yeah why don’t all lives matter and look at the fbi statistics and etc etc. I mean this isn’t about a lack of education it’s about a lack of experience and the channels YouTube promotes preys on these people.
