In my experience Catholics are "I voted for Reagan" Democrats.

My grandmother is a devout Catholic, goes to mass every weekend and all that, when I came out she said "I don't care if you're purple, I love you for who you are I don't care." Although...I feel like if I had an abortion it would actually be a huge deal to her. Not that she wouldn't love me, but that it would really break her heart.

Everyone in my family was raised Catholic and for me I never saw the doom and gloom version of it, but I know it exists. In my family it's manifested in raising mostly socially progressive people, maybe because religion was kind of a required, but not enforced thing we did growing up. We had to get our communion and confirmation and sometimes go to mass, but my family never talked about things in a religious context, like no sex or drugs or being gay because Jesus, or whatever.

Conversely, my girlfriend's mom is a strict Lutheran (who, ironically, goes to a Catholic church but thinks Catholicism is a "lesser" version of Christianity) and she's been torturing my gf about being a lesbian for years. Like serious psychological and verbal abuse. And yet my gf still considers herself a Christian and calls her mom out all the time for being exactly what Jesus WOULDN'T want.

In our cases I feel like it being a cultural thing vs. a practiced thing made a huge difference. My father grew up in a much stricter Catholic household and got the Catholic school education and I know that was shitty. But he still accepts that I am a lesbian, even though I know he took some time to "get" it. Mostly a generational thing there though.

I’m torn between really loving and finding comforting the rituals and solemness of Catholicism to the point that i used to consider converting VS. everything about my political beliefs. Since i can’t square the two at this point, no conversion.

i also didn’t grow up in a religious family.

I guess this is a religion thread now. Anyway, the main thing that drove me away from Catholicism is the unnecessary hierarchy and hypocrisy of putting priests, bishops, etc above the "common" people, and the corruption that a system like that invites. Also the weird stuff with Mary and the saints. But I do really miss certain aspects of the mass like you mentioned. I rarely get that same feeling of solemnity at protestant churches.

This is a good summary of my thoughts as well. Going to a Catholic school and doing the organized religion thing really pushed me away from that type of set up.

I think it's weird the way the Catholics venerate and pray to the saints. Nothing against the saints themselves. I just don't think there needs to be a middleman between an individual and God.

You could always just be like “fuck it” & just practice the aspects that you appreciate & that are beneficial to you without subscribing to the entire system wholesale, lol. Which, maybe you already do? Nothing wrong with a nuanced engagement with a structure (whether it be a religious system or, say, the Democratic Party, lol).

Feel like we’ve discussed this before in like the Christian music thread or something? lol. But, yeah, I really appreciate my church being open to a wide range of worship practices, from charismatic stuff like tongues to things like common prayer & Taizé worship.

I wss raised protestant and I have no doubt that growing up with that ideology paved the way for my leftist politics. Honestly probably made me a socialist before I understood what that meant. Took me much longer to grapple with the sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc etc unfortunately.
