Random thought: Are they going to take a long break from "episodes" after 9, or abandon the concept of trilogies and keep on going?

I'd like to see them keep the trilogy structure for "episodes" forever, and just develop enough neat concepts to play with within the extended Star Wars universe that they can wait a long time before returning to the Skywalker saga. Maybe even close to a decade? I won't be genuinely mad or whatever if they don't, but I will be kinda disappointed if the jump from IX to X isn't too different from the one from VIII to IX. Who knows, maybe they could even jump around in their trilogy timeline? lol.

Anyways, regardless of what they do going forward, the new trailer for this film looks great. I think this could easily become my second favorite Star Wars film after Empire.

I would implore you to watch Clone Wars first. It was great at the end. It starts off slow but really gets going around season 3 or 4. A few characters from that show end up in this one. If you need to though, you could definitely jump straight into Rebels but you wouldn't get the full impact on some big moments. Like huge moments really.

The trailer was good but it's no where near TFA hype for me.

I think they will take breaks from the saga films between trilogies. At least, I hope they do.

I definitely feel a sense of I guess I would call it blockbuster fatigue with this and the superhero movies, even though the projects sound exciting and I'll enjoy them there is a sense of oh great another one

I feel like it really depends where they want to take the story. If they want an older, more established Rey, Finn, etc (assuming they all make it through this one / Rey is still the hero) then they may wait a bit but really, I see them just jumping right back into it.

I think they're just starting out with familiar stuff to ease people into the "spinoff" stories. if they plan on continuing them indefinitely, they'll have to branch out into newer territory eventually, it'll just take some time.

While I love VII, I can't imagine a movie that exists as a homage to what has come before and only works by recycling the plot and iconography of the others being my favorite. Didn't mean to imply it was a bad thing! I can see people who have never been into Star Wars having it be their favorite though.

For me the plot's not that great to begin with so what really matters to me is the characters and I like Kylo more than Vader, Rei more than Luke, I even like BB8 more than R2, ha. I think the allusion to what happened between the films works really well and has me excited to find out more and I think the story's set up nicely to move into new territory with VIII and IX.

Sure, but A New Hope is recycling influences across genres, and the Force Awakens is recycling A New Hope. I don't think it works that well. And for the structural/character/story influences the original film had, its textures were all new and inventive. The Force Awakens, not as much.

  15. Sure, the force awakens "rehashed" a new hope (I think there is a YouTube video where someone said this criticism is lazy because all the movies rehash themselves). But I think the movie is great and important for a ton of reasons and those criticisms don't mean much to me.

They isolated tons of fans by making the prequels and now people complain that the new one is too much like the original. These people will never be satisfied.

Or you're simplifying/misdiagnosing legitimate criticisms. And I don't think the prequels isolated anyone, everyone who loved Star Wars pre-sequels still loves Star Wars.

That would be true if anyone liked the prequels

What? I'm saying the prequels didn't isolate anyone. They were bad, a lot of people thought they were bad, but they all came back for the Force Awakens and most people really liked or loved that movie.

TFA is great on multiple levels. You could say the rehashing is "lazy", but it's done so well imo. I personally love the new characters too even the ones that weren't that fleshed out(Poe, Hux etc).

If it's not broken, don't fix it. The way I see it TFA did a good job at taking elements and story fragments from ANH and mixing it with original content.
