It’s not contradictory at all. The battle system is fun and interesting in a vacuum, but the design of the game turns the idea of battling into an annoyance/hindrance.

 

How can it be an annoyance if it is fun and interesting. Isn’t that the whole point of any system? Can’t that be enough? Is Tetris for Game Boy bad because it has no progression?

 

It’s an annoyance because it’s getting in the way of me reaching the next bit of great dialogue or the next cool part of the world to explore. It’s not enough that the battles are a unique spin on turn-based combat, after enough times engaging with it it’s going to start to feel rote and like going through the motions just to make progress. If I were gaining XP and leveling up stats I would be actively seeking out as many battles as possible (which is what I usually do when I play a JRPG).

I don’t think Tetris is comparable to this game. The pure gameplay is the only reason to engage with Tetris, it’s not trying to tell a story with funny dialogue whose pacing can get derailed by constant turn-based battles that don’t provide the player with anything in return to make up for the disruption to the flow of the narrative.

 

I think you maybe wouldn’t say this if old Paper Mario would never have existed, if this was the first game in a new franchise that hasn’t been marketed as an RPG ever. I can be wrong though.

 

I don't think so. In fact, on the one hand, I think if Paper Mario hadn't originally been envisioned as an RPG series and successor to Super Mario RPG it wouldn't even have turn-based battles. It would either be a whole series like Super Paper Mario (which was a really good game that I enjoyed back when I thought it was just a one-off experiment and we'd be going back to the RPG gameplay in the next game lol), with enemies you just stomp in the overworld and real-time boss battles.

But I also on the other hand don't think Paper Mario would exist at all if it wasn't originally supposed to be an RPG. The whole point of the paper aesthetic was due to the devs wanting the game to be presented in a visual style that embodied its heavy focus on RPG-style storytelling, writing, and characters as opposed to action gameplay.

 

just got xenoblade chronicles DE over the weekend

never played the wii version but I am absolutely loving this game so far

 

What's really funny is tetris is now the kind of game that absolutely benefits from level based progression, there is not a single version of tetris I've played more than 99

Would've rather gotten Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 Remastered instead but Nocturne is cool.

Overall though that was a waste of 8 minutes. All of those "announcements" could have been accomplished with just tweets of the individual trailers.

 

Even with the tempered expectations of that announcement tweet, this was bad.

I have no idea what the SMT series is but this mini direct wasn’t bad. It’s just weird that the main focus was a game launching in 2021 when we don’t even know what’s coming in the fall of 2020 and Nintendo just said a month ago they wanted to focus on games that would be closer to their release lol yeah okay, Nintendo

 

Japanese Mini was legitimately way better

 

It’s a dungeon crawler RPG series that Persona spun out off, as well as other games

also my guess the point of this direct was to get some stuff out of the way, plus the announcing of release dates for third party games isn’t up to them

 

I really don’t understand why they aren’t announcing and dating their first party stuff.

 

Give me SMT V now

Nocturne is amazing and way more deserving of a HD remaster and people have been waiting for that SMTV news forever. I'm glad they gave us fans a little direct.
