This is the third time I've randomly seen this thing promoted. I officially have to watch it.

I have seen all of Linklater's films, and he has so much variation in quality. It is rare; there are directors who got worse over time, but it is rare to see someone go from masterpiece to dud and back. David Fincher is another one.

Linklater is also doing another Boyhood-style experiment. That seems really risky; there are so many ways for it to go wrong. Linklater's daughter did not want to act as she got old older so she appears less often, but what if that had happened with Mason?

there are films being released in theaters right now, but drive ins only. IFC is absolutely slaying the drive in theater game. Major studios would never go that route though. What we're going to see throughout the rest of the year is indie films being released via drive-ins or skipping theatrical straight to VOD, and major studios are either going to just push back their movies or give up and go premium VOD

Soderbergh has always felt like someone who is willing to try anything that piques his interest. A lot of times it does not work but it is much more valuable to try than to stick to a formula.

Yeah, I’m curious at this point what you all think is going to be the first movie to break that threshold.

The future of movies depends on what the "new normal" is. Even if we have a vaccine in January and everyone gets it, to what extent to our behaviors change? Does wearing a mask, long common in Asia, become more common in the West? With people being more and more used to movies coming out on Netflix and VOD even before the pandemic, do people become more willing to stay at home? If the recession is deep, how cautious do people become with their money?

Before the pandemic, we were looking at a future where less and less movies come to theaters as the theaters try to show the newest Batman or Star Wars on a fifteen minute rotation across half of their screens. We are probably looking at further erosion of the mid-budget movie; films for a few million can easily recoup their cost through digital sales, while all of the ancillary merchandise and international appeal of blockbusters keeps them going to theaters.

I always appreciate artists trying new things even if it sometimes means a dud here and there. I love that Soderbergh made red neck oceans eleven, a thriller shot on an iPhone and then a basketball drama three years. Loved two of them. Didn’t care for one (Unsane), but it was still interesting.

  17. Right now, the theater across the street from me is showing Jurassic Park and Ghostbusters

Making it real hard to not go out in public to watch a movie I’ve seen a million times...

All the torrenting I planned for this hotel stay has been thwarted by the hotel's WiFi blocking torrent downloads. I'll never see Hamilton now.

Watched A Dry White Season tonight, which featured the line, “Hope is a white word... it is not a word we need”, which ruled.

Which of those will go to on demand?

  23. Mulan and Black Widow should just get tossed onto Disney+

Top Gun might as well get put on demand. It probably wasn’t going to do well anyway haha.

I’m dying to see the new Ghostbusters movie. I wouldn’t mind that showing up on Netflix or something.

I'm sure most are just going to stay TBD until theaters are fully back. For major studios, losing the theatrical window is a huge blow to the financials that most won't want to lose.
