That looks pretty cool, I wonder if there is gameplay beyond the combat though

 

It appears it has visual novel elements. This review also says that the combat often only has one viable solution, and deviating from that usually leads to death. I'm not a fan of that.

This is a pretty glowing review

 

It's got 84% on Metacritic(only 13 reviews) so yeah in terms of low budget JRPGs that most people haven't heard of, it's a pretty great one.

 

I haven't actually seen it running on Switch irl, but on YouTube and so on it looks really polished in terms of graphics. What has your experience been?

 

Yeah it's pretty good graphically, I haven't played on handheld though. My only complaint is the load times can be a bit long in places.

This game really is something

 

I've played and beaten Ryza on Switch. It ran perfectly fine, never had an issue. That being said, it was an alright game. I don't think I'd go out of my way to recommend it to people.

 

I did some digging and SWERY is apparently very openly pro-LGBTQ and although there's some content that is offensive and trope-ish, a majority of it seems to be from poor translations.

It looks like SWERY genuinely didn't mean to offend, but may not know what is deemed as offensive when it comes to trans people so I'm glad he's bringing in other people to help educate him and fix it.

the weirdest thing about this is that apparently the main character in the game goes on an impassioned, vehement defense of trans people and the LGBTQ community, only for the game to then devolve into problematic shit like deadnaming immediately afterward.

 

Like Vase said it’s probably due to ignorance then

 

Hopefully whoever he's consulting on the re-write is able to educate him properly. Seems like he genuinely regrets causing trans people harm.

Disappointing.

 

I know a lot of people who don't know about the use of deadnames. I didn't know until someone snapped at me and was like "Don't use their deadnames!" and I didn't really put it together and had it explained to me. Now I don't do it. I do wish they just pulled me aside and calmly explained it to me instead.

It's still difficult for me sometimes when I'm trying to explain something that happened with a person that only knew them as their deadname.

 

All the sites and reviews I respect have rated it at least an 80 and that's enough to make me excited to play it.

The combat and battles aren't usually my favorite thing about those games anyway. I like the characters you meet and the weird sense of humor in the world. It also just looks visually appealing to me.

 

Lowest I've seen it in a long time.
