I’d watch joker again over watching IT 2 again.

  2. This wouldn't be half of what it is without Phoenix's performance, but after two viewings, I ultimately enjoyed it (despite how unsubtle and muddy it is).

I'll be honest, the love JoJo Rabbit got from white liberals all over my social media pretty much smothered the little interest I had in seeing it to begin with.

Not even Joaquin could save this dialogue.

That “What do you get when you cross...” line at the end is the most embarrassing shit I’ve heard said in a film in a long time.

Best Actor should’ve gone to Adam Driver

I did not understand the hype around Phoenix in this. It did nothing for me.

Jojo Rabbit is like the same level of lazy satire as Alec Baldwin’s Trump. Joker sucks but Jojo was just kinda embarrassing

I haven’t seen Jojo and don’t plan on it. Joker was okay, definitely overrated when it came to award season. The score for Joker is the best part of the film.

I feel like the fact that this movie became part of a culture war by essentially being the anti-last jedi for a certain sect of nerd crowd makes this movie more unbearable than it actually is. Like it's fine - it has some good cinematography, score, and Joaquin being allowed to do his thing in a studio movie. But yea it's super shallow and a borderline Robot Chicken parody of comic book movies.

It really is baby's first Scorsese. After a lifetime of only caring about superheroes/star wars/blockbuster movies - seeing something like this could be a real eye opener.

Remember when they made Joker's laugh into a Tourette's type thing & had him carry around cards explaining his condition? Maybe the most awkward thing about the movie to me, lol.

And, yeah, I'm far from an expert on the topic, but it does kinda feel like the praise for Joaquin Phoenix in this movie comes down to people mistaking "good acting" for "a lot of acting."

But, in the interest of injecting a little bit of positivity into The Internet, here's everything positive I can muster to say about this film:
    • the scene where he drops the gun in front of the kids is genuinely hilarious
    • people trying to impose actual coherent politics on him, which he rejects on the talk show, is an accidentally compelling look at modern day politics
    • transposing the so-iconic-it's-cliche death of Bruce's parents into a new context, changing the meaning of that scene, is an accidentally compelling take on comic book adaptation
    • the infamous steps dance is good shit (until they puzzlingly shift from the iconic sports anthem written by a creep into that boring ass dramatic score)
    • the final riot, culminating in the rioters lifting up Joker like a king, is good shit

Remember arguing for this when others were saying it won't happen, though it does bum me out that most fans of the movie probably won't. Not that people have to have refined movie tastes to be good, well rounded people or whatever. But, there's definitely a major strain of pop culture zombies (gah, that sounds so condescending, lol) who are content with the blockbusters that can function as LaCroix of art. Which, does intersect with disappointing immaturity in other areas of life.

Still, I do continue to believe that some people will get into more compelling stuff as a result of this movie, & for that I'm quite thankful.

Ideally, more people would seek out other options. But, and I should have worded that differently - my point was that people that normally only cared about blockbuster/nerd stuff are considering this a masterpiece/best film of the decade because they aren't used to watching character dramas.

So yea, good for Todd Phillips and WB I guess for releasing a billion dollar R Rated "drama"

the people who were blown away by this movie don't want character dramas, they just like that a superhero movie was serious and dark and swore

I’m literally drinking a can of (non-LaCroix brand) sparkling water right now, lol. No hate, but it is a fun alternative to saying “watered down.”

Bubbly and Target’s Good & Gather sparkling waters are both way better than La Croix!

the lemon cello la croix is fantastic though

I typically just buy those cheaper Belle Vie sparkling waters they got at Aldi 'cause I buy my groceries from Aldi & am super cheap.

When I see the lemon cello LaCroix at Aldi, though, I do like picking those up.

This and the scene where he walks into the door were so funny, and only me and a couple other people in the theater seemed to understand that lol. It honesty could have been more interesting if they simply added more overtly comedic scenes

Reminds me of why someone like PTA is a revered genius and Todd Phillips is... Todd Phillips.

PTA let weird funny stuff happen in his Jaoquin character study, The Master like PSH screaming "PIG FUCK"

Joker seems afraid to include moments of levity in fear of not being taken serious
