I've never read that but wow does he say EXACTLY what I've thought about the record, but never knew how to say.

it was just missing some sort of guts. The raw emotional element? There was something about that record that was lacking and I don't know what it is

 

I meant the "The first 4 songs are fine but after that eh" because that's just flat out wrong.

 

There's a ton of emotional element on that album. More so than on MDL or PS for sure. Definitely the best album of their later career.

 

Go is a very good record. And so is Panic Stations. And so is every other MCS record. The end.

 

In terms of tone and lyrics the album gets darker after the first 4 tracks.

 

dark MCS is good.

 

Doesn't mean it's not a bummer to listen to.

Musically the album is fine but it's the album I return to the least.

 

There's a lot of MCS like that.

"From the sounds that disappear to the changes we begin to fear
(I can hear you clearly.)
One day I'll fail to breathe and all you'll have are memories
(All we are are memories.)"

 

"Time Turned Fragile" comes off as more nostalgic and thinking about the future including death but it's not about death. Those lyrics are somewhat reminiscent of "Happy Anniversary". Yet "Happy Anniversary" just reads so much more present like "I'm going to die today versus I'm going to die someday"

The saddest MCS songs are the best.

 

I mean, I don't know about that. I definitely think they can be some of their strongest, but they can be hard to listen to, I agree with that much.

Everything Is Alright remains to be a wonderful song.

 

I bought Go and Celebration Rock on the same day

Just for me personally, he's always been so good at speaking to the sadness of life and the songs that hit me hardest are usually the saddest. I mostly gravitate to sad/painful art though.

I still love stuff like EIA but it'll never be top tier MCS for me.

 

Go definitely touches on heavy themes, but to me it's always been way more about acceptance of death than death itself. It's a journey, so some songs really dwell on it (and I get if they are hard to listen to for personal reasons), but the way it hits such a low with Happy Anniversary and a narrator whose death has actually arrived, only to switch into the optimism of Floating Down the River is beautiful to me. I really feel like we're left on a really positive take away.

 

It really fucks with me as someone who has had multiple close family losses in the past year.

 

Son of a Gun is probably the #1 MCS song that has grown on me. I really did not care for it when I first heard it but damn if it hasn't wormed its way in.

And Timelines remains an MCS all-timer

 

its true that if GO had Alcohol eyes, Bottom Feeder and Give Up, and cut a couple tracks, it would be probably a great album that wasn't divisive. Instead it is ok and divisive. It's my least favorite of theirs.

 

Dude, the little synth line in between the first chorus and second verse is so fucking good. (Unless it's a guitar, but I thought it's synth)

 

Ya I think that's definitely the synth and it's sick, but the guitar parts really shine all over that song too.

 

The only song from the b-sides that fits tonally, especially production style wise is Give Up Give In.

The two others sound like b-sides. They just don't really strike the same notes (ha) as bigger MCS songs.

 

I think all three of those are weaker than almost anything on the album.

 

I just read a comment of someone wanting MCS to release a whole b-sides and rarities album and I would be SO down for that especially if it meant I had a higher quality version of Sunny Day.

 

The Worst Part is prolly top 10 MCS for me.
