I'm really hating twitter lately. We have an idiot running a twitter page where he's claiming to be the official page. But he's abused it and just posts shitty and inciting things towards Liverpool supporters. Reporting the tweets can only do so much. When I tell him to use his personal page he says I'm bullying him.

 

Soccer fan twitter can be a real wasteland

 

Soccer twitter is bad because people care more about banter than nuance.

 

Also, I'd have Smalling, Stones and Mings at CB before Dier.

 

Maguire and Joe Gomez are the starting CB pair surely?

 

Just the one point separating me and second place in the fantasy league at the moment. Well done to whoever second is as I have no idea who they are around here. Oh, and challenge accepted!

I really didn’t know what to do with the CBs. They’re all kinda meh

 

Maguire, Gomez, Smalling are probably the 3 best English CBs I'd say. Smalling has always been solid, he just can't pass or dribble effectively. But as a third option and someone to have in the squad, he should 100% be there.

After that, you're on to some unknowns. Mings could be great, but probably needs more experience. Wouldn't want Dier anywhere near the squad (though his form has picked up recently). Stones fits our style of play but has at least one clanger a game in him. But as a partner to Maguire it could work - I feel like Stones and Lindelof have similar qualities and Maguire seems to make it work with him so far.

 

When fit, Gomez has to be in. In terms of all round ability on and off the ball, he's the most complete English centre back. And if Maguire starts then you need a quick CB partner for him.

 

Yeah, I'd agree Gomez should be the starter next to Maguire. With that said, if Dier keeps improving at CB he will earn a spot on the team. I know we were playing a team that parked the bus for majority of the game, but he looked really good when called upon. He shut down about everything that came near him and his long passes were on point. Reminded me of Toby from a few years ago.

As far as which formation I like best from above, I think I'd go with the 4231.

 

Last week it was Kane who wanted to leave. This week it's Ndombele. Never gets old.

 

I did momentarily forget Gomez existed, my apologies. Haven't watched enough of him, but most people seem to rate him.

I'm not Maguire's biggest fan, but he's a solid option. Stones perpetually feels like he's about to fuck up. Smalling has had a really good season with Roma by all accounts.

 

If England go with a 3, Smalling should play. He's probably the best pure defender they have

But they won't call him up because reasons. I'm still annoyed we loaned and will sell him. He was our best defender too.

 

Southgate just has too much of an ego to go back on his original decision. People should be able to play their way into the squad. Even with Smallings limitations, it's clear he's the best pure defender that they have. England could definitely get away with one less ball playing CB given the amount of possession we usually have and the benefits it would bring in organisation and leadership.

I can see Holgate playing his way into Southgate's plans come what 2021. He's been our best player at the back this season.
