Off topic, but my sister loves bacon and when she was like 8 and first heard the name Kevin Bacon, she freaked out and exclaimed "OMG I WISH MY LAST NANE WAS BACON"

My sister did a different one, but I dont remember her results and we're technically only half-sisters so it wont be as close or easy to see. My full brother refuses to do one. Hes one of those "I dont want my DNA on file"

And yeah when I was like 20 I found out that my sister is really my half sister and that my mom was married to someone before my dad and I just never had any idea. (My dad + his family are also estranged from me. There’s just a lot of mystery in my family lmao)

Omg but crazy part I forgot. I'm pretty convinced my mom has a half sibling through her dad she's never known about. Someone comes in a as DNA match as a first cousin match to me, only on my moms side, but shes supposedly an only child. I messaged the person but they haven't logged in in over a year and it drives me crazy!

 

Yeah, I have black hair but super pale skin. A lot of the family has that shared look, but some have a much darker complexion. It’s funny to look at how the genes fell when I see some of my cousins who are quite a few steps removed but look much more like me than many of my first cousins.

And yeah, unfortunately I’ve heard that kind of story a lot over the years. There’s certainly a very uncomfortable history and continued use of the word. It’s only since I’ve been an adult that I’ve really given a lot of thought to how I’ve experienced it over the years or what my reaction is when I see it now.

 

Unfortunately Ukrainian racism against Romanians is so rampant. I only as an adult realized how fucking dumb it is [edit: because I had no one to tell me! Literally a random article I found one night opened my eyes completely]

 

Oh yeah for sure. I think that’s part of why my emotions around it are so complicated, because for me it was a mixture of growing up hearing certain stories or words from family members that made it clear they had that kind of prejudice themselves and sort of passed it on to me while also at various points having it leveled at my family in casual conversations or as a joke or something. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized just how harmful it was in both directions.

Yeah, I can feel the weight difference in everything. One of the girls I babysit is always trying to do my nails. But shes 9 so she still globs it on and I'm like everytime

 

To flesh out my thoughts instead of posting a quick post lol
- I know “tooth gems” have been around a long time on POC and weren’t called that by them lol but it’s gone mainstream and it feels like every tattoo shop around here now also offers them
- I don’t know many people with them but I do know a few people that do them
- I always thought it was very strange and had complex feelings about how it related to “grills” and commodification of black culture and shit, but I’ve never unpacked the feelings just kinda side eyed it in general But my point being there’s prob a lot to say there
-I don’t know why I don’t find them cute and then I have to wonder if it’s because I’ve been hearing the messaging that they’re “ghetto” and thus bad for so long
