I don’t think that’s really possible, nor is it really how movements like this tend to work. MLK was *a* leader, but he was not *the* singular leader by any means. But there does need to be a much greater degree of unity around specific policies / proposed alternatives than I have been seeing for a while now. I think like with M4A, establishing a base line to argue from is a good starting point.

But there’s not really a simple way to create that unity either lol. In a better world we would simply have one or two major political parties that we could rally around to serve as that base line. Like how with M4A you could simply defer to Bernie’s plan and argue from there.

I definitely find there's a messaging chasm between "reformist" and "abolitionist" ideological camps, especially online where its easy to latch onto the idea that anything other than abolition is not good enough and not worth even talking about, but in reality you obviously can't snap your fingers and dissolve every PD in the nation so what's needed to achieve the end goal of what people refer to as abolition is a series of increasingly aggressive reforms that shrink the responsibility and resources of police departments over time.

And frustratingly its being framed by some as an either or proposition, you're either for abolition or your for reform, which doesn't really make sense because one can't exist without the other. Obviously there are tons of smart people who have studied this stuff and have laid out paths to get there, but it seems like the message is getting muddled by some online people who are prioritizing an "ideologically pure" stance over the complicated but achievable path to the end goal

  6. I have an un-thought-out working theory that this exact reason is why he won the primary. He, and his team, are actually hilariously "offline" compared to every single other candidate. Every other campaign was so online and reacted to everything in real time and every Twitter sway or swing ... and Biden just kept on being old and male and white and boring and it ... worked. I don't know what this says about anything, but I find it interesting given how "online" I am and what I think about compared to people I know that aren't even remotely aware of, really, anything.

The Klan needs to be stamped out period. They’ve been a terrorist organization since day one and we as a nation needs to get rid of them

Does anyone know of any decent, simple explainers with data on what cops actually do in their daily work? McCaskill’s tweet is a good example of how many people think the police are out resolving constant physical disputes and stopping shootings and other crimes in real time, when we all know that that is often a movie fiction. Most crime that they witness and respond to in real time is relatively minor, while big crimes like murder and rape are not so much explicitly prevented as they are investigated after the fact (obviously a physical police presence can be a deterrent, but that’s not the same as being Jack Bauer and constantly preventing attempts of those things). But idk any sources that have tried to succinctly illustrate that with numbers in some way.

I’ve been thinking about this too. I want to see some good simple data visualization on what cops do/what types of calls they report to/etc

Hmm. Makes me feel somewhat better about the possibly accuracy of this poll.

Texas is going to be within 5 points this year and I am here for it.

I think it would go a long way in showing the average person just how bloated our modern police state is. Like people have it in their heads that more money for the cops = less crime, but obviously there have to be diminishing returns at a certain point

RIP to the AP days when randos would pop in every once in a while and argue some crazy shit and get bullied by everyone. I felt a little spark of joy the other day when Jesse West came in and started talking about how he was preparing to fight the military lol

I agree with those saying that phrases like "Defund the Police" are vague and are in some cases doing a disservice. People who are uneducated on the issue hear defund the police and think it means strip 100% of their funding to be an anarchist pipe dream of getting rid of the police and having no one to enforce laws (and they would especially think this if someone say abolish police), when it reality most people are just saying, police are way overfunded, so you shrink the scope of policing and invest the funds in the community to improve social programs and other resources.

Reminds me of "abolish ICE". You have people thinking that it means you just have no one to enforce immigration, people would just come across the border as they please and no one does anything about it, when in reality most people meant that other agencies like the department of justice would take over their responsibilities and be able to handle it in a more humane and efficient way.

Of course, "Cut funding for police and invest in social programs!" just doesn't have the same ring to it as Defund the Police.
