I hate their hits, but I know they're fairly well-regarded, so I'm not totally closed-minded on them as a band.

I always thought UB40 were reggae for whiteys to afraid of actual reggae.

All I know is my mum liked them when I was growing up. She has terrible taste in music.

That was part of it sure lol But they’re not an all white band for what it’s worth

I mean they have 3 albums AllMusic rates at 4.5 stars, placed an EP on the Pazz and Jop poll in 85, 4 Grammy noms for best reggae album.

I hate "Red Red Wine", but they've had their share of acclaim beyond white moms.

Definitely. One doesn't have to exclude the other. You can be both. The Beastie Boys were the save(er) choice for white people but also made some of the best rap albums ever made that were basically universally appreciated. Anyway I also think that applies to early UB40 more than later UB40 anyway. They're definitely a credible Reggae band.

Also I talked about this with my girlfriend this morning and we definitely immediately thought of middle aged cornballs being into Red Red Wine but also pretty soon arrived at the conclusion that UB40 is probably also maybe the coolest thing those people ever listened to, so it isn't the bands fault :crylaugh:

Also, again, I fucking love Red Red Wine. Also I made my family listen to the Greatest Hits in the car today :crylaugh:

They’re just one of a number of bands/artists that my mum used to play in the car that I grew to either dislike or be apathetic towards. Them, abba, Neil Sedaka, Bryan Adams. She liked Simply Red and Alanis Morrisette too, who weren’t that bad I guess haha

British people seem to have much more complicated feelings about Simply Red, but all I know is Picture Book is an excellent record.

Listening to Pantera today, I realised how much I love a strong fade-out. In particular when bands/artists add small, new elements as the song fades; there's something kind of enjoyable about the limited gratification, the strain to keep listening to what they're doing.

Of course it can be done lazily, and sometimes a good ending is sacrificed. But a good fade-out can add to a song and even provide a platform for some extra creativity. People sometimes give them too much of a hard time.

Drag The Waters may be the best Pantera song.

One of my favorite album endings is the last two minutes of this song, especially after such an abrasive and aggressive album.

Favorite Zao album. Don’t listen to ‘em a lot, but dang is that a strong heavy album.

Hell yeah, it’s in my top three of all their albums. I found out recently that it’s “rated” at the bottom of their discography and that just blows me away.

    Love it.

Back in the mid ‘00s, some of my heavy music loving friends hated it & loved Funeral of God. Meanwhile, I never had any interest in Funeral, lol, but loved the whole recording mostly live w/ Steve Albini thing. (Probably somewhat influenced by the Nirvana kick I was on at the time.)

I also dig Where Blood & Fire Bring Rest, even though I came to it later, ‘cause the sound reminds me of the heavy music of my youth. Sort of an indirect nostalgia there. But, Fear is just so cool, imo.

I like Funeral but I’d rank it down with Awake? and those are just kinda above the pre-Dan era.

Blood and Fire, Liberate, Fear, and Virus are all absolute bangers though. Hell, I love Self Titled, too. They rule.

"Suicide Note" would like a word with you. Whichever part is the amazing acoustic one. I can never remember if it's 1 or 2.

    No doubt, me too!

I have a few short clips from a live show I went to a few years ago, I’ll upload them later. They’re pretty good quality.

Probably the best Pantera record, although I’d say it’s tied with Far Beyond Driven

Not sure if this is necessarily unpopular or more just uncommon, but instrumental tracks/intervals don't really do much for me. I have no issue with bands including them, some of them are cool, but I don't really take them into account when i'm considering/reviewing the album as a whole. They don't really count for or against the overall appeal of an album.

There are a few exceptions to this rule (Yellowcard's Convocation and Enter Shikari's Elegy for Extinction spring to mind).
