best use of strings (or at least my favorite atm) on this thing might be on "bagsy not in net"

someone pointed out The End is basically a re-worked hnscc I’m p sure.

also one thing I do like about The End’s placement is that first plucked hit is really dope coming after the chaos at the end of people

to me this is the closest they've gotten to recapturing the spirit (not the sound) of the EPs

late night vibes, hazy electronics, introspective lyrics, a band just kind of stretching out their interests and modes

now that i know that "the end" is basically an orchestral rework of an EP track i'm even more into it

This is probably the furthest they’ll be able to push my fandom without dialing it back with a more concentrated effort next time. I enjoy a lot of whats happening here, but if they double down on this for LP5 I think they’ll lose me.

  9. So their attempts at music shouldn’t be critiqued when they do it poorly? They do the style of music they do so well, why wouldn’t the parts they’re not as successful at not be something I would notice? Their whole thing is trying out new genres and most of the time they take those swings they do it very well. But they also miss. The way you choose to interact with my thoughts on the pieces of music is so dismissive and rude that I’m bowing out of even talking in this thread about my favorite band cause I wanted to talk about the music, not be “lol you thought the orchestra arrangement should be good.” So, enjoy the thread of no criticism or discussion of music I guess.

i'm being neither dismissive or rude! remember when you responded to my arguments last night with "nah"!? i'm just saying the expectations you're bringing to this 2.5 minute orchestral rearrangement of an old EP track don't really apply to its effectiveness as a piece of music on this album

    yeah.

imo the sequencing of the EPs made no real sense lol. the songs all fucking ruled and were diverse tho, and i’ve made many different playlists and had a lot of fun re-structuring those tracks. I think it’s cool. NOACF, imo, feels kinda like it’s meant to be taken however you really wanna take it. the songs are Notes and the Conditional Form is the album format in which they’re presented.

anyway i have no intention of driving anyone—least of whom jason—out of here by just talking about whether some tracks are good or not, so i'm decamping from this thread myself

I was thinking this morning and I think I came to the conclusion that I Like It When You Sleep will always be my favorite, but A Brief Inquiry might be their best? Like the most succinct statement of what The 1975 is?

    lmao at this stanza:

And I met One of your friends
and it was dead nice, he was fine
but he said things that interest me exist outside of space and time
Now, I know I should've left it but who says that? What a sigh, it all kicked off
And it's been playing on my mind

One critique I will give it is I really wish they did the previous intro again instead of the Greta intro. The current intro would work a lot better for me if the whole album was more of a statement on the subject. But they really don't revisit it.

This is one of my favorite sets of lyrics on the album. The line before this he talks about how he wonders if he'll get divorced, indicating how he's doubting this idea of everlasting love in marriage being the solution to his loneliness. So it makes sense he'd be hostile to someone else expressing a similar desire for something transcendent when he's doubting it himself. It's why he can't get it off of his mind.

The way I see it regarding the intro,
I am someone who is very passionate about climate change and capitalism pretty much destroying the world around me, but I am also a person with relationships and feelings. I have sudden bursts of clarity, anger, depression, joy, love, and defeat. This album is very much a reflection of all of these things. I think Matty just wanted to make a record that encompassed his whole self.
