  7. Free to read: Inside Trump’s coronavirus meltdown
What the headlines missed was a boast that posterity will take more seriously than Trump’s self-estimated IQ, or the exaggerated test numbers (the true number of CDC kits by March was 75,000). Trump proclaimed that America was leading the world. South Korea had its first infection on January 20, the same day as America’s first case, and was, he said, calling America for help. “They have a lot of people that are infected; we don’t.” “All I say is, ‘Be calm,’” said the president. “Everyone is relying on us. The world is relying on us.”

He could just as well have said baseball is popular or foreigners love New York. American leadership in any disaster, whether a tsunami or an Ebola outbreak, has been a truism for decades. The US is renowned for helping others in an emergency.

In hindsight, Trump’s claim to global leadership leaps out. History will mark Covid-19 as the first time that ceased to be true. US airlifts have been missing in action. America cannot even supply itself.

South Korea, which has a population density nearly 15 times greater and is next door to China, has lost a total of 259 lives to the disease. There have been days when America has lost 10 times that number. The US death toll is now approaching 90,000.
This entire article should be enough for anyone to know how grossly incompetent this administration is.

  8. I just read the Post's story about the Apple/Google exposure notification project and it might be the single worst piece of tech journalism I've ever read. It's completely wrong, everywhere. It's a completely fucking farce that shows not a single person involved has any fucking clue what they're talking about and it should be retracted.

Edit: Guess I wasn't the only one angry about it. Here's a pretty good breakdown of just some of the bullshit in it.

Facebook has agreed to buy Giphy, the popular platform of sharable animated images, Axios has learned from multiple sources. The total deal value is around $400 million.

We use the Giphy API here. Grumble.

Just saw someone share a video about how, since the CARES Act was actually originally a bill that passed the House in January of 2019, it’s further proof that the whole pandemic is fake and planned lol.

I took the time to explain to him that it’s a legislative trick to write bills faster and etc, but I assume it’s going to fall on deaf ears.

I feel like the number of deaths here in the US is approaching the point where it is too big for people to actually really grasp, like the amount of money Jeff Bezos actually has. Most people are easily able to wrap their head around the number 90,000 for sure, but I don't think people in this country are used to applying that number to deaths of actual human beings here in this country. It is an absolutely staggering fucking number, and it is still rising quickly each and every day. I can't find any other way to understand what feels like a huge disconnect to me. It feels like everyone is just ignoring this.

I don't think it is realistic to think that in this day and age we could have actually prevented the virus from hitting this country, but I don't think it is at all unrealistic to think that a competent administration in the White House could have kept our situation in this country more along the lines of Germany's situation. I do understand that our numbers would have probably always been larger than Germany's just due to the differences in population, but I mean comparable. The incompetence is now directly resulting in tens of thousands of deaths that were easily preventable. I am not throwing that word 'easily' around lightly, either - I truly believe an appropriate response to this pandemic was both readily and fully attainable and also this administration's direct and absolute responsibility.

I don't know, I think the rampant stupidity is getting to me more than I usually try to let it.

Yeah, I keep having to contextualize it for people. Like take your favorite baseball stadium and double or triple the capacity and that is the death toll. We are closing in on the death toll exceeding the capacity of the biggest football stadiums in America, which are among the biggest stadiums in the whole world. Just endless body bags. I don’t think people grasp it.

Exactly. First off, it's an entity our civilization should be without regardless of coronavirus. Secondly, its 100% not an essential business. Thirdly, okay, so if a business isn't essential yet it's safe, I'm okay with that but people aren't allowed to go that doesn't apply l. Fourthly, this isn't one of those "mental health benefit" for people at home like other sports/wrestling...its horse racing, it's legit JUST FOR GAMBLING. So you're opening up just to appease gamblers? That's fucking stupid.
