Again some good stuff on the Fine Mess EP but nothing I'd consider essential.

The beats are usually really good and they have some genuinely insanely clever lines in pretty much every one. On the other hand, I kind of feel embarrassed when I watch them lol

Oh okay that isn't that bad. I stand by it actually.

EDIT: Although I will say - seasons 1 and 2 have not aged well.

  7. Bitch I'm Madonna paved the way for the current crop of pop girls working with PC Music affiliated producers, and would have been deemed a classic had it not been released by the bizarrely most hated woman in pop music.

Madonna is the most hated woman in pop music?

  9. Who else then? I can't really think of another example right now. There was Janet Jackson but she took control of her career back, and Justin Timberlake's declining career feels like karma for the hate she took instead of him.

As for Madonna, I've been revisiting her discography for the upteenth time, diving into the wider context behind each album, and I'm really surprised how much shit she got early on. The media were coming at her for standing up for LGBT rights , and especially for the people who were left abandoned to death during the AIDS epidemic.

Besides that, it astounds me that she got ageist comments as soon as she reached her early 30s. And it never stopped. In the last +15 years, there's been a narrative that she's a old hag who should have given up years ago, and instead keeps chasing trends and younger men... I could go on and on. It's even weirder as those comments sometimes come from younger pop fans whose favorite current popstars are indisputably influenced by her discography, consciously or not.

I've seen it happen once again last year as she released one of her most adventurous albums and, way too often, it got dismissed for reasons unrelated to the actual music. It's like her refusal to follow the template of pop singers her age (doing nostalgia centric tours, releasing covers and christmas albums instead of pushing themselves with original material), or her existence alone angers people.

I feel like her heritage is slowly being ignored because of her more recent controversies, which isn't that surprising I guess. The amount of vitriol she constantly gets for bullshit is suspicious though. It's weird because there are valid reasons to drag her at the moment, like her questionable and out of touch instagram posts, last year's Eurovision appearance, etc.

Madonna can be a try hard who does dumb af things. I also think she faces a lot of ageism tho.

I was thinking maybe Britney or Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift or Katy Perry or even Nicki Minaj (although she's not really pop) as the most hated woman in pop music in recentish years, but I see where you are coming from much more now.

I don’t have a problem with any version of Madonna but I’m still low key in love with 80s Madonna, she was so fucking cool

I love a lot about Madonna but I tried to listen to like... 3 or 4 of her "best" albums and I really think she's more of a singles artist, to me, I haven't found many deep cuts or full albums that I dug

  17. Which ones? I was the same at first. It took me a while to fully get into her discography because she's tried so many styles, and most of her post-80's albums clock in at +55 mins. Not many of them are immediate.

  18. It's impressive how well her debut has aged. It's pretty much a perfect pop album.

also this was a few days ago but abba fucking slaps. the visitors is one of the best albums ever made

  23. Yes both are excellent. Erotica finally grew on me recently. I might be in the minority thinking her peak was the Ray Of Light - Music - American Life trilogy. All three are so weird in their own ways, and it surprises me they've sold this much. The latter in particular is underrated, and doesn't sound that far from the lofi bedroom folk/pop that became popular years later.

american life is so underrated, people were just really baffled by how hard she was going with mirwais into glitch mode but in some ways i like it even more than music
