I still don’t understand how songs like No Future, Rabbit Hole, TOTTM, and even Sober are so under-appreciated from the album.

Some of those songs were very listenable for a live performance, I remember I ripped Always and a few others back when these were first posted

Matt kills it on Always. Really wish they would switch Down with Always if they feel the need to play singles.

So funny to me that they throw that U2 thing in at the end of Always long after Tom is gone

If he's ever seen it, he must be like "fuck why didn't I think of that" lol

I love Not Now and Anthem Part 2, I can't get mad at either choice. But I'd choose Anthem Part 2.

Damn, this just reminds me of how real the Blink-182 buzz was around this performance and the lead up to California.

Yup. So strange how they nailed the roll out for California but blew it with NINE. Especially since NINE is a better album. It’s almost forgotten now.

They just really nailed it with BTD as a single. Don't forget how much complaining about the Cali album rollout there was in here too lol

I truly don’t remember but that sounds about right haha.

You’re right though BTD was the perfect first single with Skiba. I think that’s what hurt NINE, they didn’t have that really big hit single.

  12. They had multiple pretty big singles from this album. “IRWIHY” had surprising legs.

I mean, don't get wrong, BTD bangs hard and went gold, but they never played it during Monday Night Football like they did with IRWIHY.

I can totally see IRWIHY having a more permanent place in the setlist over songs like STFTK or Down. It's new, refreshing, and a good slow jam for them that switches things up. Plus, a Post Malone co-writer helped write the song...bang bang.

BIOMY and IRWIHY just didn’t feel/seem like big singles though. Especially compared to the majority of their other singles. Maybe it was that those singles from NINE had such mixed opinions. I don’t know maybe it’s not fair to compare a single from 2019 to one in even 2016.

I will say....I was definitely more into BTD right off the bat than I was with any Nine singles. Although, I listened to the shit out of BIOMY when it dropped.

BTD was released in April while IRWIHY came out at the beginning of the football season, not really a fair comparison. Plus BTD was a #1 single for them while IRWIHY peaked at 13. I bet they would trade an appearance on a random MNF game for a #1 song.

It’s weird because I played the hell out of BTD and California when it dropped but never over played any of the NINE singles or that album in general. I like NINE a lot more than California and while I think NINE has aged much better than California it’s just kind of there for me if that makes sense.

Or trade it with a song that didn't need to be unbelievably re-mixed and mastered because the original live performance of it was incredibly terrible live.

I mean but they were big singles, something any artist would kill for. Two hitting the top ten on alt radio with huge streaming numbers too, that’s good. Not *as big* as their best single on a long time (BTD), but good enough for their album to end up being one of the 70 best selling albums of the entire year even with a late release.

Like I said maybe it’s not fair to compare singles in 2019 to past singles. Just looking at the peak numbers but BIOMY hit #11 and IRWIHY hit 13. When comparing it to their other singles only 3 of them (Always, Not Now and HISALP) did worse chart wise.

You definitely know more than I do on these subjects so if you say that album/singles was a success I believe you. It just didn’t feel that way. Maybe because California had more hype around it and a massive tour? It just seems like NINE came and went and was forgotten pretty quickly even though it was a better album.

My point is I don’t understand why people always feel the need to convince themselves the band is failing in this thread. Any artist would kill to do this well and have those numbers in 2019/20 and yet it’s only ever talked about as a failure. (Green Day had a higher charting single, worse selling album, for just one recent example.) And the longevity of IRWIHY on radio and continual Spotify spins makes it hard to argue it was forgotten. That song is still very popular. And two top ~ten radio singles with a bajillion streams isn’t a failure. It’s good! It’s really impressive! It’s why I’m always gonna push back against the opposite narrative.

I mean the actual performance was bad but they do that with all those performances from what I understand. Glorified music videos.

Yeah didn't overall the GD singles do better for this new album? And they still sold half what the last album did. Just like blink. That's just like where sales are at this point I think.
