My state isn't swing but part of why I'll prob cast a vote for Biden anyway is I want Trump absolutely buried by the popular vote. I want him to get the worst ass whoopin an incumbent president has ever gotten. It's selfish I suppose but a large loud rebuke of his 4 years of insanity to smack down the MAGA crowd would be nice.

Crazy that the range of outcomes at this moment is something like Biden near 400 EVs and Trump winning 270 lol

Our state finally seems to have collected the actual total number of tests done. and it seems to have added roughly 2500 negative tests to the currently reported total, which is good. Means our ratio of positive to negative tests gets a little better.

We're still not testing as much as we should be though. Seems like they're only processing roughly 5-600 tests a day here.

Not sure why people are freaking out about this. Considering the biggest loss of insurance right now is due to people losing their jobs, it's an easy fix to just cover the cost of COBRA for them so they can just keep the insurance they already have.

I don't know if it's as easy to expand Medicare or Medicaid because of the way those programs are built/run right now

Yeah, this was my reasoning for voting for Hillary in 2016 and probably why I’ll vote for Biden. I want Trump to lose by as many votes as possible to show that the country overwhelmingly rejects his politics (unless I change my registration to PA, then I’m in a crucial swing state lol).

Just got mansplained to about why voting for Biden is my civic duty. The Patriarchy is awesome, especially when encouraging a woman to vote for a sexual predator.

this proposal is just a messaging bill, because they won’t be back in session until May. By which time, folks who’ve lost insurance so far would be (I believe) outside the window in which they can get into COBRA. So if it’s just a messaging bill, who is the message for? It’s to the insurance companies, because it’s exactly what they’ve asked for:

I imagine if this is the plan they went forward with, they'd include language to retroactively allow folks who lost their jobs in March/April to apply

Maybe? I think it’s bad that the plan they came up with is one that keeps insurance providers afloat at a time when they could be proposing something better. Like, the willingness to let private industries write legislation instead of proposing something that addresses the obvious flaws within our system is indicative of the uselessness of the Democratic Party - they’re just acting as middlemen here.

Democrats have 0 vision of a better system they can offer people, or even a plan that meets this moment. They just are carrying water for AHIP. Because at this point, it’s a party that isn’t designed to create something better, it’s a party designed to carry water for the ruling class.

People in the marketplace are also losing their insurance because they are out of work and can’t afford their premium so cobra is just not going to fix this problem. I don’t think it’s common in the service industry to have employer insurance. Small businesses take advantage of the small business reimbursement that just sends people to the marketplace and reimburses them up to a certain amount. This was how my former employer got us insurance. Cobra wouldn’t cover that. It’s stupid to not do this comprehensively, they keep saying oh we’ll fix this huge problem in the next bill

Not for nothing, but building an entirely new health care system would take months/years to get up and running. Even expanding existing public health programs would create a lot of troubles because of how htey're currently built and implemented, so that too would take months.

Simply giving people access to the insurance they had before is a lot easier and quicker to execute comparatively. It's kind of the opposite problem of expanding/increasing UI instead of just giving people a monthly check of $2000 or something like that. The Unemployment system is a convoluted mess of 50 different systems and ways of doing things and it was kind of dumb to do it the way they did instead of just depositing a check in everyone's account each month.
