On top of what people have already said with the huge transportation hub, you have people coming in from neighboring states for work and stuff too. Just the huge population density in not just NYC, but the area in general is what is making it so bad.

Doesn't help that tons of people were idiots and didn't seem to take it serious. Packed subways, parks, etc that just fueled the spread. Example of people not listening is when USNS comfort was going through the Hudson and hundreds of people gathered to watch it instead of staying inside.

Very good point. I remember a week or so after all the lock downs started there was a series of pictures from LA and one was the subway system (or close to it?) and residents were mocking the picture saying its always that empty and others saying they legit had no idea that was there or even how to get to it lol so yeah, I could definitely see that being a big difference between the two.

This is why I'm saying that 'advisories' don't work. Nobody listens to advisories and when you extrapolate what is shown on that little video clip to New York City and the normal conditions of everyday life before the social distancing efforts, you can see exactly why we are looking at the kind of numbers we are seeing in NYC right now.

Any day when the weather is at least halfway decent when I am driving in to work in Jamaica Plain, people are absolutely PACKED into the public parks and on the streets and sidewalks there. Literally all right on top of each other. All passing well within six feet of each other, and most everyone passing within two feet honestly, and many people are exercising and breathing heavier than normal.

Massachusetts is on track to be the second hardest hit state after New York and nobody is talking about it right now. Our projected deaths are way above New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Louisiana or anywhere else in the country aside from New York. I do hate even saying this, but from the numbers I have seen it has seemed to be true: so far, in MA, the vast majority of deaths have been older people (60+) and the smaller number of cases of younger people in their 30s & 40s have seemed to have pre-existing conditions. But I mean, we're all fucking human - who doesn't have pre-existing conditions by the time they're 40?!? I'm fat as shit and I have asthma - COVID-19 is taking me out like the fucking trash if I catch it. We're at about 700 deaths in the state right now but we're predicted to have about 6,700 so that means over the next few weeks as we approach our peak we are looking at 6,000 more dead people in the state. Those aren't all going to be old and already sick people with those kinds of numbers, and even if they were that is still fucking awful and we should all be doing absolutely everything in our power to protect the more vulnerable of us.

I joke as much as the next person about hating Massholes and not being able to stand people in this state, but when push comes to shove I absolutely do not want 6,000+ of them to die, and I am doing whatever I can to try to help not let that happen.

I had no idea MA was on track to be the second hardest hit, nor did I hear the latest on their deaths. Holy shit. I didn't realize it was this bad already. Really worried for my dad. I dont understand how NH only has 23 deaths with how little people are following social distancing and being so close to MA.

Yeah, that cloud is scary as fuck. That's why I have been acting for weeks in a manner that assumes this is fully airborne and that literally every other human being I interact with outside of my home has COVID-19, even though I do not actually believe those two things to be true.

Go check out the IHME projections that break down the peak for each state, when that will be and how many cases / deaths we are looking at. It is one of the models that have actually looked better for the country as a whole because it shows overall deaths in the country as hitting the high 60,000s but nowhere close to the 140,000 - 200,000 that were mentioned only a little while ago. But it is looking GRIM for MA, and Charlie Baker has still not ordered any kind of lockdown or shelter-in-place or any type of real travel restrictions.

He hasn't? The main office for my company is in MA and they shut down the office like a month ago and everyone acts like they're supposed to stay home by order.

On top of what Jacob said about more dense populations being a contributor...it's still something that needs to be researched and preventative measures need to be taken wherever it is a problem. Anyway I think we can all agree the discussion has been exhausted.

Max, if Bernie “scared” you, then you might not be “a fucking anarchist socialist” after all? Unless the argument is that all politicians are scary, which isn’t totally untrue? But, still, dude, lol.

I'll never forget, back in like ‘09 or whatever, when there were a bunch of arguments on AbsolutePunk about Say Anything (during which I was thread banned for being an accomplice), & Max Bemis told David “The Personist” or whatever that Jesus would kick him in the balls.

Pretty sure that was one of the inspirations for the song “Admit It Again,” lol.
