To me the jokes seemed way too forced to be funny. As I said before, the rest of my crowd agreed.

I don't think DC movies need to be the "quip-fests" that Marvel movies have become, but they should at least be "human" to some degree. There is no humanity in this movie, no one behaves like a human being would behave.

  3. I haven't. I read his Daredevil run though. I may have read 'Cacophony' and just forgotten though.

  4. I may make the exact opposite argument, that this is the only movie that shows how humans probably would act. Hah, but I'm cynical as hell with the current state of humanity and this political climate.

  5. My crowd clapped at the end. I was kinda surprised actually.

Cacophony is the one with the villain that only uses onomatopoeia. Bet you can't guess what his name is. lol

I thought a sequel was announced awhile back, guess it never came to fruition.

Lots of things Kevin Smith announces never come to fruition.

Because he and Del Toro are too busy nerding out with ideas to actually make them happen.

I just remember the scene where Lois needs to borrow the Daily Planet's helicopter, Perry says no, she says "it's not for a story", and Perry's response was "Go!".

"Yes Lois, take our helicopter to an alien slugfest, make sure you take our pilot, may as well risk his life too!"

"BOSS THERE ARE TWO GUYS FLYING OUTSIDE OF BUILDING CAUSING MASSIVE DESTRUCTION!!! WE GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE"

"Now now Edward, don't be hasty, we can't leave until Mr. Wayne tells us to. Wouldn't want to make the boss upset would we?"

Idk, at this point I am just being a dick about it.

  12. I mean, we know historically that people don't evacuate buildings they probably should during times of crisis (man made or nature) because they feel "safer" inside. That didn't bother me nearly as much as the actual imagery did.

This seems like one of the brief moments of humanity in the movie and Lois's character. I liked it.

When I see people write about how Snyder's Superman is selfish and not inherently good, I always think of the scene in Man of Steel when he lifts the bus out of the water and saves all his fellow classmates. Or when he saves those people on the oil rig.

I really like that Devin Faraci piece, which isn't a surprise because he's one of my favorite film writers. He leans a little heavy into the idealism of Superman and the "damage done" to him, but makes sure to avoid getting into a "what Superman would/should do" argument. But he does hit on some really valid, worrisome points coming out of this franchise. This is a violent, grim Superman. His dad died and he killed Zod in the first film. He died in the second film. They're foreshadowing the potential for Lois Lane's death. I think there's room for a Superman who's not as tied to the traditions of the character, but this version really is messily characterized and definitely "off" in a lot of ways. In Man of Steel they show him helping people from the minute we see him, but the whole movie he's debating on whether or not he should help people. His actions are at odds with his arc in a way that feels poorly written, not purposeful. When an alien threat comes to Earth with the power to destroy the entire planet, he's still questioning whether or not he should help. That's just... really dissonant with any version of Superman I can imagine. Not to read too into Zack Snyder's personal politics, but he is a guy who reveres the Fountainhead, which to me feels like Lex Luthor making a Superman movie. Why would Superman help people? He doesn't have to. Okay, he's in a conflict where he has something to gain by helping/is directly responsible for the imminent danger, so he decides to finally help.

Even the instances of his helping in Batman v. Superman are crafted in a weirdly dark, intimidating way. He stands there looking down at the poor family on the roof during a flood. In a community of non-white people he stands there while they physically worship him. All that stuff is just slightly off. I know it's intentional given the context of Batman v. Superman and creating a context for Superman's morality to be questioned, but I think that'd be more effective if the actual audience was given more reason to have faith in Superman. If we at least knew that his efforts came from a genuine place of care and wanting to do right, even if there were missteps along the way (killing Zod/Metropolis destruction), then the distrust of him and the plots against him would have more investment. Snyder fumbled that in both movies, or he didn't really care about it at all.

Re: Kevin Smith, I liked Red State. I've heard good things and a lot of bad things about Tusk, so I'll see that eventually. I've listened to his podcasts a few times and I don't really have a problem with him, but I find the constant swearing obnoxious. The only comic run I've read by him was Green Arrow: Quiver, which I enjoyed

I haven't read any critical writing on this movie and not sure if I need to. I like simply enjoying a movie despite its flaws.

I like Kevin Smith. I was a big fan in high school but that changed when he stopped making good movies. Still, no issue with him. I like Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma a lot. I remember reading his Batman and Green Arrow stuff but don't remember a whole lot about it. I do remember Batman peed his pants in one of Smith's books, but Batman v. Superman had a jar of pee as a key fixture during an important scene so whatever.

"Following Batman Vs. Superman, it's learned Ben Affleck is contracted on for at least two more movies with Justice League Part 1 and Part 2.

It's also learned that Ben Affleck has written his own Batman movie script, though THR notes it's only an option for Affleck and he is not contracted on a solo Batman movie.

"He's contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape," he says, adding, "there's a script that he's written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that's out there as an option," Patrick Whitesell, co-CEO of the talent agency, William Morris Endeavor (WME), said."

I seem to recall his dad scolding him about that. I think Superman wants to be a hero, I just don't think these movies allow him to be the one he desires to be.

Ya, afterwards Clark says, "What was I supposed to do, let them die?" And Pa Kent hesitates and says, "...Maybe." There's a moment of dialogue in BvS where Clark says he's been living his whole life trying to follow what Pa Kent taught him, and that maybe he was wrong. Can't remember the exact lines.

I recall Martha saying he should listen to his father. Which I did not like. I could have missed a line. As I mentioned after first seeing it, I had a super coughed next to me and a baby who cried a lot of the first half of the movie right in front of me.
