For a band with such good lyrics, "Sweetness" is kind of boring.

the music and melodies more than make up for it for me. I don't think I'm quite as enamoured with their lyrics as most seem to be though. There's definitely some good stuff but nothing they've written really wows me lyrically honestly.

"Sweetness" is catch enough, but I don't think it's one of their best from that angle either. It's just all around one of the more middling tracks in the discography for me.

It was the only song of theirs I liked for a long time so I have spent a lot more time listening to that one so maybe it'll just take a while for the rest to catch up, ha.

It does seem to be a song that people who don't actually really like Jimmy Eat World enjoy. I guess I can see why. It's more of a crowd-pleaser or "jock jam" than most of their other songs.

I love that you included Closer. That song is absolutely wonderful and I feel like it gets underrated because of the presence of Disintegration on the ep

Well ya wrong Craig, ya wrong.

Idk there's enough emotion packed in them to make them great to me. Those last few lines in particular are great.

What about them is great? 60% of the song is "woah oh." I agree Jim delivers them well, but the lyrics themselves are nothing special imo.

    I was spinning free
With a little sweet and simple numbing me

So tell me what do I need (Tell me what do I need)
When words lose their meaning (When words lose their meaning)
    I was spinning free
With a little sweet and simple numbing me
    Yeah, stumble 'till you crawl
    Sinking into sweet uncertainty

    I was spinning free
With a little sweet and simple numbing me
    What a dizzy dance
This sweetness will not be concerned with me (whoa oh oh oh oh oh)
No the sweetness will not be concerned with me (whoa oh oh oh oh oh)
No the sweetness will not be concerned with me (whoa oh oh oh oh oh)

Cmon, that's pretty good stuff. But if you don't agree it's no biggie

I think it's just another example of Jim's kind of vague early lyricism that I'm not particularly taken with. I think he got so, so much better as a writer with Futures and Chase This Light. Compare this to something like "Kill" or "Carry You," and it just doesn't measure up. I've always seen this song as being about unrequited love, and I think Jim has tackled that same subject more powerfully elsewhere.

    hmmm

It's not meant to be a lyrics-oriented song. It's about the hook.

Which goes back to my original point: for a band normally so great from a lyrical standpoint, "Sweetness" is kind of boring.
