I think the problem isn't saying the aftermath of the allegations was a weird situation, it's that dropping their name in a song and then casting what happened as "the weird stuff" is what the issue is. The context sort of makes it sound like he's minimizing what happened or that he doesn't take it as seriously as he should. And if people are exposed to Pinegrove because of that song, like you said, they might not even think to look into what happened if they think it was just "some weird stuff". So it's dropping their name in a new single without reckoning fully with why Pinegrove is problematic.

Right that makes sense. Gotcha. I personally don’t expect all that much - The 1975 is clearly a passion project for Matty and is 99% of the time referencing his life or whatever fad/commentary is relevant at the time. I don’t hail bands as messiahs after what happened with certain bands

And let's be real, most people are wayyy less online than we are and probably aren't going to think "who is Pinegrove and I must find out if they're problematic" like I do but only because I spend so much time on this site lol. Most people would probably search them on spotify or apple music and go from there.

For the record, if he's telling a story about a night that actually happened to him where he had some friends that were going to a Pinegrove show, I can see how someone with as privileged of a viewpoint as Matty wouldn't think anything of throwing that detail into a song. But instead of saying Pinegrove, someone with more self-awareness and tact might have just said the friends were "going to a show" or something like that and leave it at that. Saying it was a Pinegrove show adds nothing to the song lol
