I've only seen Fireworks and Sonatine, the former of which I think it an absolute masterpiece. He's such a fascinating figure to me because he's known internationally as an art filmmaker but in Japan he's widely known for his work as a comedian and the interest in his films is pretty minimal (from my understanding).

I haven’t but I’ve been waiting for it. Played the festival I go to in Montreal in the same section as the new Pedro Costa, Lav Diaz, and Alberta Serra, which is an incredible bunch of films to be programmed alongside (they were literally my top 3 of the year).

 

I also pray that you realize that you do not have to wade through Oscar shit

 

The Berlin competition is honestly too much. New Hong, Garrel, Petzold, Tsai, and Ferrara, along with the Reichardt and Hittman carried over from other festivals.

Ignore this first tweet, but here’s an incredible thread of Chinese films that will likely/potentially premiere this year

 

So much of those names mean very little to me but excited to see them all nonetheless, Rock Solid in particular

 

Quite a few of these are basically veteran filmmakers now, people who started in the 80s. I don’t know if you’ve ever watched his stuff, but Johnnie To is one of the most purely enjoyable directors around. All his films feel like they’re operating at 200%

 

To is in my radar (likely due to your posts around here?) so I’ll definitely get to it soon!

got a lot of time off the next couple weeks so I’m gonna get caught up. got Bait, Sorry We Missed You, Martin Eden, Les Miserables and Beanpole lined up

 

Caught a screening of Bellocchio's The Traitor yesterday, which I thought was great. It's been pushed as a mafia movie because, well, it is, but I think it's even more compelling as a court room drama. Those scenes are so fascinating.

I would definitely be curious to hear your thoughts on Martin Eden. That was in my top 5 last year. Beanpole is also excellent. Sorry We Missed You + Les Miserables are also very good! Strong run of films lined up.

Got to see The Turin Horse at TIFF Lightbox over the weekend (my first Tarr film) and my brain feels like its been dissembled. An absolutely surreal experience.

yoooo! i went with my boss and co worker who both were like their 4th/5th time seeing it on the big screen, fucking mad men.

Are you going to any other of the tiff best of decade screenings?

 

I had seen it once before like 7 years ago when I really had no clue what to do with a movie like that lol. It was amazing to see it again, especially in a cinema like that.

I’ve been really bad with making it out to screenings lately, probably because I had seen them all before. There were a bunch of decade ones I wanted to go to but this was the first. I’d like to go to one of the screenings of The Master, but I’ll definitely be going to see The Strange Case of Angelica and Vitalins Varela (which was my second favourite 2019 premiere). Maybe I’ll see Zama too but that seems the least likely.

Are you going to any others?

 

TBH i had no clue what to do with that movie. I havent very little experience with this type of film. I kind of just kept my mind open and let it wander where it wanted to go for those 2 and half hours. I def am still processing it but i sure did enjoy my time there. It completely sucked me in

The only ones i got left are Burning + The Master with the talk by Adam Nayman (both of which ive seen before, but excited to see on big screen). I was gonna go to a lot more but then TIFF announced all the films in their The New American Nightmare programme so ima spend my money on a lot of those instead lol.

I hadnt seen like 80% of the best of decade films, so the rest im going to watch at home sometime soon, cause im interested in most of them.

 

Adam is a really great speaker. I've seen him introduce a couple screenings but I also had him as a teacher last year and he filled in for one of my other classes just last week. He's really smart and articulates his ideas so well, I always appreciate his perspective. I'm torn between that screening or another that fits into my schedule better.

The whole decade selection is really good so I would highly recommend checking anything on it that sticks out to you when you get the chance. Outside of the few I listed above, I really recommend Transit if you haven't seen that one.

 

thats good to hear! my boss saw him do like a 2 hour talk on the master once which he said was great, which is what got my interested in first place. Pretty sure he also announced a PTA book today.

Ive heard about transit in passing but ill take note of it! I've been watching movies at an unhealthly pace recently, so all the reccs are needed/appreciated lol so thanks!
