Well, when you try to be disingenuous about our concerns by suggesting that we personally reach out to his band mates if his behavior is a legitimate concern, people are gonna point that out to you. Maybe that wasn’t the intention and if it’s not, you should word things a little better so that it’s not the implication you’re trying to project.

 

FYI, Dan was fine with a Nazi being on one of his records so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he's at least indifferent to Matt's flirtation with Nazism, if not fine with it, so idk what you think "talking to Dan" is going to accomplish here.

 

Listen; I realize this is a sensitive topic, and I was legitimately coming in here asking without any tone, because I hadn’t seen anyone mention it. Considering that Matt and Dan are currently recording, I was simply wondering if anyone here HAD reached out to ask wtf is going on and perhaps inquire about complicity. Matt’s behavior has progressively gotten worse the past several years, and I’d like to know why Dan continues to work with him given what we know.

 

Yeah, admittedly that didn’t occur to me, so you’re right— that does cloud things. Complicity is a complicated beast, and it begs some questions that should be answered.

I’ll secede on that point. Lots of unanswered whys we probably will never understand, which is a real genuine disappointment.

 

I asked a couple days ago if anyone in the forums knew Matt and had personal feedback. No one replied yes.

 

Again, we do not need to personally know someone to see that promoting nazi material is a shitty look and something that shouldn’t be done on a large platform. It literally does not matter if we know him on a name to name basis. I don’t understand why this is such a massive sticking point to you.

If that was meant for me I am not trying to be insightful, and actually just looking for insight.

In a lot of the situations in recent years when you hear about people’s public reputation vs the reputation from their peers and co workers they are entirely different.

I always thought Harvey Weinstein played the role of big shot producer, but it seems clear now that he had a reputation for being a predator and a lot of people knew it. Once the conversation shifted from public image to personal stories it really got the ball rolling on his behaviours that lead to crime charges.

Looking for people with personal feedback would offer a new insight. What’s he like beyond playing on stage, interviews and social media? Could be different. Could be a super nice guy or could be even more off putting.

 

why does it matter though? what if someone was like "nooo hes a super nice dude, super rad, loves his mom, donates to charity" would that make it any less shitty that he's actively promoting the stuff he's promoting?

That personal experience may support your case and be “he’s a horrible guy, hates his mom and steals from charities”. If that’s the common feedback from people with experience I would like to know.

 

It wouldn’t make it less shitty or lessen the need for someone to reach him and get him to learn what is problematic about the shit he’s posting, but I imagine for a lot of people it might mean a lot to them to know if he actually believes in the message of this stuff or is just a problematic idiot who thinks oh this is/looks cool and then doesn’t follow up on it beyond that in any critical way.

Maybe that doesn’t make a difference to you but for some people it might, especially if it gives them hope he can be reached and reasoned with (whereas if he was a full blown white supremacist, i think most people would just wash their hands of it and give up)

 

Matt strikes me as a very contradictory character and I sort of tend to take a lot of it as an act or image based on his influences and behaviour.

Also, some people just crave attention, even it becomes a detriment to themselves and the people around them.

People understand that the whole shock value/not caring what people think ethos is what leads a significant number of punks to Nazism, right? I don’t think Matt believes in the tenants of Nazism, but he’s closer to a Nazi punk than any form of punk rock in the traditional sense.

I find it strange to appear on a song/video with Steve Aoki, or work with African American hip hop artists and producers and then be a white supremist. Also, I feel like that racist culture is pro Trump, but Matt has been anti Trump. Yet I was surprised to hear he was a member at a gun range.

Like I said, he’s always sort been a little controversial, just in a different way than a Mark for example. One had animated bull testicles on his bands album cover, the other 3 clocks each at 6:00 to make a 666. I don’t really find either of those things appealing, but I accepted them as part of an image a band is trying to present to get attention.

I‘m glad no ones condoning his behaviour, but people can interpret it a little differently and make a decision they feel most comfortable with.
