I had to have emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed a month ago and I currently have eight active claims ranging from $500 to $22,000. It's obscene and all the paperwork is nonsensical and ridiculously contradictory. I'm very privileged in that I have decent insurance through my school and I'll have a job that pays well soon enough, so I'll figure it out eventually even if I have to pay a lot, but GOOD GOD WE NEED M4A RIGHT NOW

 

I’ve never dealt with major health scares/procedures but one thing I learned to help reduce costs is to ask for an itemized list of everything. Doing so will greatly reduce your bill. The fact that Hospitals get away with this shit is insane.

Yeah I'm 27 and had never had any health problems of any kind before this so it's financially terrifying

It's insane. Coming from the physician side of this, it's insane when we periodically have to meet with hospital admin who audit us for not billing appropriately. I've been written up more than once for underbilling. What a world.

 

These bills are meant to intimidate you. Don't pay them, ever. If it comes to it start harassing your insurance provider.

Yep. Most hospitals will negotiate your bill down to a more reasonable level. They just want to get something out of you.

Eh, not bad. Don’t like that glaring gap between the 39% top tax rate and the 5% surtax on incomes over 5 mil. I’d say make another tax bracket for incomes between 500K and 5 million at like 45% or something
