Read this twice as a kid, had multiple jerseys. Kobe was my hero. Disavowed him later in life for obvious reasons. Feeling a lot of complicated stuff right now, seemed to really demonstrate the human capacity to change. Tragic loss.

    Anyways:

I won’t pretend that I was a Kobe Bryant fan. Loved to root against him and he would always pull off something crazy leaving his haters shaking their heads in respect. He leaves behind a complicated legacy but he strived to better himself as a human and learn from his mistakes. What I’ll remember the most about Kobe was his love for his daughters and his love for the game of basketball and sharing his knowledge with others, being an advocate for women’s sports. This news breaks my heart. It breaks my heart that 9 people died. It absolutely guts me that his 13-year old daughter was with him. This really sucks.

Kobe Bryant - love him or hate him - is one of the five most iconic NBA players of all time. Even those who don’t watch the sport knew Kobe. He is your favorite NBA player’s favorite NBA player.

    Rest easy.

I remember playing this game for hours on GameCube when I was younger. I always chose the Lakers or Bucks.

After today, there should be no doubt that he is a top icon in NBA history. Forget all the bullshit for a moment about ranking players by “greatness”, whatever that means. I think the timing of his death in terms of the current players who idolized him is really powerful. Not sure MJ would even get this reaction from the modern NBA in the sense of personal connection. I can’t remember a darker day in sports.

Kobe probably gets a stronger reaction today than MJ because he retired much later than he did, and therefore most players playing today grew up or had just started in the NBA when Kobe was in his prime. Whereas not too many in the NBA really remember much of the height of MJ's playing days
