To have literally ANY staffer acknowledge and maybe even discuss the critiques made against including NF and blink, specifically

  3. I was really trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but it honestly feels like you're just picking parts out of my posts to respond to without actually reading any of them. Actually done with this conversation now

I don’t understand the NF critique outside of the fact that he sucks

okay. As I previously stated I take issue with NF being included, particularly the context with which he was included.
I also take issue with including blink 182 amidst everything (altho yes at least you included a statement but imo that’s not enough)
I can hammer out more in a bit but I’m frustrated rn

Well I explained it already and I’m not in the mood to repeat myself to people who outright chose to ignore it the first time around lol

You can always frequent a different site...creating this much havoc over music opinions is a bit ludacris imo.

  10. I've never listened to NF and while I enjoyed the blink album for what it is it's not on my list and I'm also disappointed in their XXX stuff (from a personal stand point I sold all my blink vinyl) and have stopped listening to them because of it. neither albums are on my list.

  11. Ok, let's start with NF. NF made the list mostly because it was one contributor's number one album of the year, therefore giving it a good amount of, and said it was because of how much it helped them with mental health issues this year, it meant so much to them that it became their number one album. The contributor is not white. Is it better if I editorially veto one of our contributors of color's top albums of the year to keep it from being included?

ohh right silly me if I have an issue with a site I love disappointing me I should just...shut up and go away! Lmao. Good one.

If you don’t like seeing my opinions you can block me. I’m literally just stating my thoughts which is the exact same thing everyone else on this fucking website is doing

being editor or ceo or whatever you consider yourself surely puts yourself in difficult positions. This sounds like one of them. I don’t have the answer for a perfect outcome for you. but as editor/ceo you should be mindful of the overall image that a eoty list is projecting.
having one rapper on it and it being that rapper is projecting a specific image. That image is what disappoints me.

Edited to add: it also wouldn’t have been the only rap album if the other problem of not diverse enough didn’t exist as well. So you have one problem basically contributing or doubling down the other.

My posts didn’t disappear like they are right there earlier in the thread. Like I really don’t care because you’re not a staffer therefor not in charge of this list therefor not even involved but I digress. It would be quite easy to go back to the earlier pages and see what I’ve already said without expecting me to just repeat it.

I just... I don’t get it. It’s a bad look that no rap albums made the cut based off of the numbers. It’s a bad look that the only one who did is a corny white dude. I don’t know what you seeking an apology from staff members who didn’t vote for the dude is going to do, lol.

The blink thing sucks. They fucked up, I’m happy Jason included it in the blurb. The more troubling thing is that so many other artists out there continue to promote his music. And Chris Brown. And MJ. The list goes on. It fucking sucks. I try my best to speak out against any of those situations as loudly as I can, but where is that line? Do I write off every artist that collabs with them? That shouts them out? I honestly should, I suppose, but that brings the playing field down a ton

    Not directed at you specifically:
How about Young Thug? A ton of people rallying for more hip hop are still repping him after he was filmed hitting a woman, amid other allegations. What do we do with him or the artists that work with him? I’ve been grappling with that a lot, and perhaps that’s why I haven’t been as hype on a lot of popular hip hop this year. Idk, it sucks all around

I'm also well aware that "but what about ...." arguments are often used to deflect from the root of the conversation and I want to make it clear that I'm not doing that. Fuck XXX and fuck blink 182 for collabing with them. I did not listen to the album and I'm not supporting them financially because of it.

I'm genuinely asking, what do you do with artists who associate with or collab with problematic artists? Where do you draw the line? The normal answer is that people draw their own lines in different places. Some people are sickened to the point of boycotting and never listening again. Some shame the artist publicly but still listen to their music. Is that wrong? I genuinely don't know. They aren't abusers but they're complicit in perpetuating the legacy of a horrible person.

  17. Most years there's more consensus around hip-hop projects from contributors, this year it appears more spread out. Yesterday, I asked for recommendations and got a half dozen or so replies and very few of them even contained repeat names. It seems that it ended up being that kind of year here and I think the image it projects is of that: a year where there was more consensus around an album like Jimmy, and far more diverse likes around some other genres. Which is how I end up being the only person with Shredders on my list, and I just now discovered Clipping. for the first time. (I'm also pretty sure Tyler's album was in the 5 way tie for 26.)

And, part of my reasoning for looking at how consensus often gets built in a big staff list is because we just released a top of the decade list that had Kanye and Kendrick in the top 5 for the entire decade.

And instead of anyone being curious about the context for why NF was on the list, it was attacked in bad faith. That I think is where I have the most issues with parts of this thread. It wasn't even attempted to be a good faith discussion, the worst of intentions were assumed.

Because I genuinely think you should understand how the list as it’s own looks. It shouldn’t honestly need background context in order to not be problematic?
This is you guys posting a publication (if you want to call it that), and us responding to it. It wasn’t posted as a “what do you guys think?” It’s posted in a “here’s what WE think” way. And you should be ready to stand by what you think OR understand how the post reflects the site as a whole.

I guess you can choose to see “what the list reflects” as ...”hip hop is so diverse we couldn’t include much of it outside of this one problematic artist, because we all couldn’t come to a consensus”. What I, and others it seems, see the list reflect is a problematic view of hip hop as a whole. We won’t see eye to eye there I guess so it is what it is.

also you would have known about clipping. sooner if you ever actually read my posts Jason GOSH

Is there a quote for NF claiming that he's not a rapper/doesn't like other hip hop or whatever? I'm doing my research and all I see is him saying he doesn't like to be called a "Christian" rapper. No disrespect for the genre, but I could be missing it.

I never made those claims just that he actively distances himself from other hip hop which is true
He definitely lets the marketing for himself be spun of “he’s SO different, he’s not like the other rappers because- gasp- he doesn’t cuss! Or just rap about drugs and hoes!! He raps about REAL stuff”

anyway I’m DEFF getting into repeating myself territory now. I already explained why that whole bit is problematic

So he has never said anything like that? I'm genuinely confused. If he did, then fuck him, but it seems like you're reading a bit too much into his fanbase and then making accusations against the staffer who liked his album, imo. Again, dude is a total dork and I don't like his music and having one white rapper on the album list is a bad look, but I haven't seen him specifically do anything problematic.
