The singer from NJ was on some fence walking bullshit last year. The topic of people in MAGA hats at shows came up on twitter and he was like you can be gay you can wear a maga hat we’re all here to rock or some dumb shit like that. Everyone in ETID called him out too which was amazing.

The guys in Underoath should have known better by 2005 though, regardless their upbringing. If you were pro Bush and playing hardcore at age 22 I don't even know what to say.

I don't disagree necessarily, but we aren't talking about children or teenagers. They were adult men shaming someone for being gay. They should have known better. Especially if they called themselves Christian.

Christianity is by inherently against anything but heterosexuality anyways though.

But we’re also on the road during those formative years where most American kids are in college.
So being on the road surrounded by the same mentality was not helpful.

It's not OK for a person to emotionally abuse others no matter that person's trauma or learned behavior from childhood.

    Right?

It's definitely not okay and that's what we're saying, but also many people don't understand how militant and cultlike the conservative southern Christian culture is. It's literally a cult. The fact they even broke from that is impressive.

I'm not really intending to argue with you even though it's going to sound like I am.

What's the difference between growing up in a deeply conservative Christian culture (like I did - 13 years of Catholic school that almost led me to the priesthood until I saw the truth of how Catholicism treated queer folk and how they really felt about women) and growing up in a household where the examples you saw of how to behave were deeply emotionally abusive?

To be clear, I think neither is an excuse for shitty behavior. I don't think we should give anyone a pass just because they stopped writing lyrics about a woman's role in a household or because they stopped wearing a crucifix.

How did they change? What active steps did they take to make themselves better? What active steps did they take to repair the damage they did to their victims? Should they have access to a public platform where they can use the same types of justifications for their past behaviors to abuse others?

Some people grow up thinking queer folk need to be sent to a camp to be fixed. Some people grow up thinking love is something you leverage to get what you want from a person. Neither is OK.

I didn't click the link but it seems weird to out a survivor like that. It should always be the survivor's choice to talk about it instead of leaking audio about his experience.

The survivor is deceased so they can never talk about it, but I completely agree. I don't think it was appropriate to leak the audio as permission to do so was (and could not have been) agreed on by the survivor.

I mean, I get that but still, it’s the callous way that comes across along with stuff like the fat shaming. It’s whatever though because I’m a man and I can’t get pregnant so who am I to say really?
