I also have been lucky that through either working different places with large groups of people or meeting people online over the years I’ve been able to stay for free in a lot of places. I wouldn’t be able to take nearly as many trips to NYC as I have if I didn’t have a bunch of friends in the area.

 

I almost feel like they are not smart enough to know any better? I am probably painting with too wide of a brush tho

 

It’s sadly more likely to be xenophobia than anything else in their case.

 

Even going to Europe or something people are afraid of that?

A) poor people can and do save up for nice things such as vacations and people always come with classism like “how can you afford that if you’re struggling!” which is just a way to judge people’s spending habits based on what you assume to know about their finances
B) LOTS of poor people are poor because of bad financial decisions such as vacationing lol

I just reject so fully the idea that traveling is only
for rich people. Literally people of all financial brackets have “frivolous” things they spend money on. I consider myself to poor overall but still pay $200 a month for weed and many people would say if I can afford that then I’m not really poor. Or someone who doesn’t smoke could take that $200/month and travel with it. Etc etc etc

like my ex’s mom lives in a trailer, doesn’t have a job, doesn’t spend money on anything really, but has been on 40+ cruises in the last 8 years, on top of Europe and other trips as well.

traveling isn’t just for rich people, it’s just easier for them.

hahah well it fit! And yeah I’m in Disney Facebook groups believe me when I say I know exactly what you’re talking about haha. But I guess also as a Disney nerd I can also understand why a little bit (for instance when you have kids it’s a hell of a lot easier to travel to a place that makes them happy/revolves around them)

The particular family I’m thinking of has some people who have traveled to other countries but others who only talk about Disney. With them a lot of travel seems to be a status thing but the place they spend all of their passion and focus is just going there and buying every expensive add-on to the resort. And blogging about it of course.

I do also know people who would consider anything outside of their own county to be unsafe, and that’s a very different kind of red flag.

Oh yeah kids are hard and that’s another angle of course, but they did it as young adults with no children and money to burn..... lol.

Agreed on the class and travel aspect. It’s all about what you choose to spend your money on and how you budget/what you sacrifice if that’s an interest. Like I don’t have a ton of money but what I do have I like to spend on entertainment and travel to see concerts or plays, but I also don’t buy makeup or video games or other things that tons of people are into so it isn’t as difficult to save for that.

 

Ok honestly even tho I super love going to disney as a childless adult I absolutely can’t understand making it your ONLY vacation destination in that case.
yeah overall even tho I give into temptation sometimes I try to not make assumptions or judgements on what people are spending
People should spend money on what makes them happy, there are allllways going to be “better” things they could be spending on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

olympics and world juniors are the only hockeys I care about

 

I've only ever traveled to 2 places internationally, and really 1 counts. I am fortunate that I have an annual conference all around the country that we use as your vacation every year. I use my income tax refund for that.

I have zero desire to really travel anywhere overseas though

 

Every new year I'm like this is going to be the year I start saving to go to Japan

You can guess how that always goes

 

I feel weird being a tourist and everyone speaks English, is it appreciating the culture or being exploitative idk

I should also mention that one of them also tags all of the brands in her posts and I can’t figure out if she’s trying to be an influencer or just sucking up to corporations because she loves them, but it’s a very weird vibe. It’s hard to convey exactly why they give me the creeps without getting too specific, lol.

I could 100 percent see her as one of those people who sells out her family for content and then ends up falling from grace because they ran a rigged giveaway or something. Or more likely the kind that gets famous pretending to be a relatable struggling mom but then an expose reveals that the whole family has millions and her father bankrolls everything behind the scenes.
