It’s cool that you can all have mature discussions about themes and shit but I’m still just baffled at how Palpatine is here when we more or less watched him die onscreen twice

I mean, the movies STRONGLY indicate that Anakin is the Chosen One and that he was created by Palpatine. The comics/books all but verify this (see the image @Jason Tate posted earlier)

but yes, just to be clear, I prefer what you’ve laid out. I wish they would have gone that way. But I don’t find it inconsistent with the saga that they did not. Apparently, this was always the story of Skywalkers and Palpatines

Idk why but I found it immensely satisfying watch Snap Wexley die lol.

My name is Greg, and I have a problem with the themes and shit in this movie hahahaha

i mean, it makes no sense. He looks damaged as if it’s his OG body buy his face looks so different. It would have made more sense for him to have taken a new body that he created. Why not actually possess one of the Snoke’s?

I just don’t care about that. So many bigger problems.

If you only at the end of it can go, “oh, I guess it’s about this family, too” I don’t think you can say it was a consistent part of the story.

I think it’s just that it’s so immediate and it’s foundational to the whole movie that I’m having trouble getting past that to dissect its shitty themes or whatever else

I also really don’t think this is much better than the prequels haha

agreed, again. I should make it clear that I’m not a fan of the execution of the ideas.

Star Wars has always been built upon retcons (Vader is Luke’s father, Leia is his sister, etc...), so whatever we get at the end (Rey is Sheev’s granddaughter) is what ends up being canon.

  12. What I do know, is I don't hate this anywhere near how badly the people that hated TLJ hated that movie. So, I feel like I win. I got two movies I actually really love, and one that I have quite a few issues with, but don't hate and it has some stuff I think is cool in it, and it's a dopamine hit. I only get ranty when I think about the huge flaws too much or when I see the "this is the best one" takes. And a BIG part of that is because I feel like the central idea of not, you know, killing someone in anger, kinda got poo-poo'd away in this film and taught the opposite lesson a few times and that's literally one of my favorite moments in cinema in ROTJ.

But none of those ruin a character or destroy their arc. It lead to growth or a new challenge.

  15. Damn, that sure is some bad layout page design then. How did they not know how that would be taken :crylaugh:

If J.J. Abrams & Chris Terrio won’t give me more Rose, I’ll let Tom Taylor & Delilah S. Dawson do so in comic form. Both taking place pre-TLJ, so I also get to see her relationship w/ Paige. (Which would also be a great Disney+ story to tell, so I’m sure they won’t.)

I liked this a lot more than The Last Jedi, and a bit more than Force Awakens. I guess since I'm not super hardcore into the series, I don't see/have the problems with ROS like the others that are. All I got to add. I have spoken.

I can’t believe that a truly great main villain couldn’t be conceived for this trilogy. Going back to Palpatine is just lazy in the end.

    Alright just got out.

pretty disappointed, but I liked a lot of smaller moments.

are we still doing spoiler tags?

Last I heard the force created Anakin after Plagueis attempted to create life and failed. I guess none of that counts now though

I have my analogy for the sequel trilogy:

The Force Awakens is like if you are someone who typically tries to eat reasonably healthy and avoid fast food, yet for whatever reason you find yourself at a McDonald's early one morning and you order a breakfast sandwich and a hash brown and when they come out they are absolutely perfectly cooked. So hot, fresh and delicious. If you look around yourself and think about it, you are fully aware that you are sitting inside of a fast food restaurant eating food that you should not be eating, but you don't care. You'll be damned if it doesn't taste absolutely incredible.

The Last Jedi is like eating a five star meal inside of a fancy restaurant prepared by a world class chef. It could quite possibly be the greatest tasting food you have ever had in your entire life. Something this bold and rich and delicious will not be to everyone's taste though. There will have to be people out there for whom the flavours of this dish simply do not resonate, or even strongly turn them off. Yet for you and many, many other people, the tastes and flavours are absolutely divine, almost better than any single plate of food has any right to be.

Rise of Skywalker is as if someone is absolutely desperate to please you and for some reason they are extremely nervous and anxious that you won't be happy, and they remember you saying how you enjoyed that McDonald's breakfast one time as like a guilty pleasure, so they insist you go to McDonald's for dinner so you admit that yeah, you always kinda had a soft spot for Quarter Pounders with Cheese but you really don't eat them anymore and before you can protest they drag you in and insist on ordering you five Quarter Pounders with Cheese & Bacon with a large fry and a jumbo chocolate shake and they want to watch you eat it all.

Without a doubt, there is a lot of cool looking stuff happening on the screen in Rise of Skywalker. A whole lot. Some of it is enjoyable and fun, and a few quick stretches are pretty great, but they are few and far between. JJ Abrams' direction in Force Awakens is fucking confident. He's a talented guy, and that movie feels like him taking this crazy opportunity he has been given and showing off. It absolutely is bravura filmmaking on a huge scale, even if the story being told does not really hold up to scrutiny and certainly comes nowhere close to laying anything resembling a solid foundation on which to build a trilogy of epic space fantasy films. The fact that it is a first film in a trilogy and Abrams' talents as a filmmaker combine to make the whole thing hang together, but only just so.

His direction in Rise feels nervous and anxious and extremely unsure of itself. The breakneck pace and rapid editing makes it feel like he is deathly afraid that you will be bored for even a millisecond, so instead he absolutely PUMMELS you over the head with incident. The story honestly feels as if they had a script for the movie all ready to go and had completed pre-production and everything on that script and the budget and locations and props and everything were all in place, and then literally the day before shooting was set to start they toss that script out entirely. They still have Disney's resources and $300 million dollars to play with and a whole bunch of Star Warsy looking shit so they just go out and wing it and make the story up on the fly. The storyline and the writing is fucking atrocious and embarrassing, but the movie is pretty fun overall I guess. Some seriously talented actors give it their all here. The technical work on display is astounding across the boards, but that is never a question with Star Wars nowadays. Saying this movie is as bad or worse than the prequels seems pretty fucking silly to me at this point.
