And you’re confusing the fact that Lucas truly had that much of a vision from day 1.

Do we know what being a Palpatine means to Rey, as in does she know the history of Palpatine or is he just some kind of name that gets passed down in history as a monster?

I am so sad that this movie left me feeling empty. I have taken a week off of work for every SW movie since TFA to see them multiple times and just love Star Wars. And I am left not really feeling the need to see it again. All the talking I’m doing is realizing how disappointing it was. Fuck.

I guess I should get in a Christmas mood to cheer myself up.

The pickle jar snoke clones really make the throne room scene in TLJ feel less dramatic too. I can never watch that again without thinking of that stupid shit

The more I think about it, the more ok I am w/ the Episodes feeling small. By that I mean, now that non-Episode films exist & will continue, I think making these 9 films’ defining, unifying idea the conflict between the Skywalker family & Palpatine’s influence makes sense. Doesn’t change that the execution here was trash, though.

Is the Johnson trilogy still a go, or did the angry “fans” kill that too?

Also, I know there are a lot of Solo fans here, but personally, the one-two punch of that & this did a lot to crush my confidence in Star Wars as a film franchise.

Going from the prequels to TFA, to Rogue One, to TLJ, each step was an upward one imo, ever increasing my excitement for the next step. But, these really felt like the point where Iger or whoever committed to the worst impulses of what this franchise can be. I’m really thankful that the next film is 3 yrs away & might be divorced completely from characters & events in the Skywalker Saga, though until I have a director, writer(s), premise, & trailers, all that individually & collectively interest me... I dunno, I just don’t care anymore.

And, that fact plus Far From Home has rippled into my thoughts on half the Marvel films on the schedule at the moment. Wild how hard 2019 has been on my fandom (& I was really into Endgame).

This is just my opinion but I took it that since Rey killed Palpatine with his own source (reflecting force lightning) instead of striking him down with her saber like he wanted, that it kept her from going to the dark side because she eliminated it. She also killed him out of self defense rather than just striking him down. This is just me trying to make sense of it

That’s exactly what I mean about technicalities and gotchas though. It also sounds even more like Harry Potter than I thought it did when you spell it out like that. Blah.

Bob Iger said they may not continue a trilogy format going forward. Him and KK said trilogies are hard and are going to make one film at a time and let that dictate how to handle future stories later on. So who knows, but I doubt the angry fans had any power to dictate that decision.

i don’t watch the Mandalorian but the reason force healing sucks in this movie is because roughly 4 times characters die (or are presumed dead) and come back to life and the movie has no stakes or consequence as a result

  14. Man. I'm trying to love this movie. I really am. But I don't think I can, as much as I love Star Wars (even the prequels at times). It's best to go in with low expectations that's for sure.

I enjoyed it, sure. Some parts were fantastic. Kylo Ren stole the show yet again. The movie looked and sounded fantastic. So many cool shots. C3PO killed it too. Definitely good parts. I mean, it's Star Wars.

But fuck, I hate how fast paced this was, and how it back tracked, and the Chewie fake out. Ugh. More cringe moments than good ones.

Overall the trilogy was pretty damn disappointing. I mean, Force Awakens was a fantastic experience to see live for the premiere. The best movie crowd I was ever a part of, and one of the most memorable times I've had at the movies. Just pure bliss. I still love the movie, but after TLJ (which I loved at first, was meh the next 2 times I watched, but really enjoyed it in the end) and now THIS movie? It just makes you look at Force Awakens totally differently, and just threw everything that happened in TLJ out the window. It makes the movie totally pointless, and ugh don't get me started on all the on-the-nose moments that jabbed TLJ in this movie. So fucking bad. I got it the first time, but jesus it got old way too fast.

I've seen every SW movie in my lifetime in theaters at least twice, except maybe Attack of the Clones. I'm not sure if I can see this again in theaters. We shall see.

  16. Also, the best part of Disney getting Star Wars has been all the spin offs. I have faith we have yet to see the best Star Wars movie or show, whether it's an adaption, original or spinoff. I loved Rogue One, even Solo yes, and of course Mando. The Obi Wan show should kill it, and I cannot wait to see a live action adaption of Knights of the Old Republic (my favorite SW story period).

I disagree. Rey learning she is related to the Emperor, the most despised human in the galaxy and that he killed her parents is not an easy thing for her. I’d argue that it’s harder for her to learn that than to hear she’s from nobody. The fact she has to learn to not let her true identity define her and to learn she now has to eliminate the blood she came from isn’t “a silver platter” for her. Everything she was looking for ended up being bad for her and opposite of what she stood for.

So many things that were seemingly building to something went absolutely nowhere with this trilogy.

I didn’t hate the film, but it’s riddled with problems. Reminded me a patchy video game plot line.

But there were things that I enjoyed. Especially the dark moments and tones.

Also the attempts at comic relief fell pretty flat.

    I’d give it a C-

I pretty much entirely disagree with your sentiment. In her situation, any answer is better than “nobody” because she’s looking for the answer to her parentage. For Luke, he wasn’t looking for that answer particularly, so for Vader to just state it that plainly is the worst thing Luke can hear. In fact, pulling this for Rey is easy as a storyteller and for the audience because it’s playing on exactly the same thing that the Luke/Vader scene is without any of the emotional resonance.

The thing is, whether her parents were nobody or she was descended from Palpatine, she still had to learn to not let her family history define her. It’s just severely more interesting, especially in the context of Star Wars, if the reason she needs to not let that history define her is because there isn’t a history there to define her at all and she has to learn to live with that.

  23. You just described the original Star Wars. Heh. It was interesting to tackle the first time.

Is it Chewie getting a medal or was Maz giving him Leia’s? I took it as the latter.

Edit: wait nvm Leia didn’t get a medal. Nvm it’s dumb.
