  1. It definitely erases the last Jedi more than I thought it would

Respectfully disagree. Thought there were enough nods, small mentions, etc. that it wasn't erased, just quickly into new territory.

this, like ~75% of all Star Wars films, is very average, over the top, nostalgic, and fun as hell to watch if you turn your brain off.

Just got back from seeing it. Honestly it’s one of my favorite Star Wars films. Easily in the top 5. I liked almost everything they did in the film. The sense of adventure. Old characters.
Rey being related to someone strong in the force is good, it being Palpatine is out there but it’s better than a nobody.
Harrison back as Han was great.
All of the voices from Anakin, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, yes give me that fan service.
Bendemption! I liked that Ben went back to the light side. Him giving his life to Rey was nice, didn’t expect the two to be romantically into each other but I don’t hate it.
Finn and Poe had plenty of stuff to do and seeing those 2 with Rey for alot of the film was something I wanted since TFA.
Rey finally has her own lightsaber and took the name of Skywalker is icing on the cake

I give it 9.5 Skywalkers out of 10.

Nods and mentions? They pretty much undid all of it.

Here we go. Next to a friend who last minute got to go ‘cause someone else couldn’t, & his excitement is bringing me enough joy to help a ton.

Seeing this tomorrow at 11:40 AM. Gonna do an early wake and bake, have a good bbq breakfast, more baking, grab a glass of wine at the concession (this IS a Motion picture event after all, don’t judge) and hopefully enjoy this film

I think my biggest complaint will always be how they handled Palpatine’s return. Not onboard with it in general, but at least handle it better than THAT.

I’m actually going again tomorrow so I’ll give it a chance to see if I feel differently.

Oscar Isaac has too much sex appeal.

Mentions of the Crait battle, the Porgs and the entire scene on Ahch-To, the mention of Holdo's sacrfice.
This stuff may have just been shoehorned in for plot purpose, but I genuinely feel as though J.J. in no way was fucking off TLJ, he just took this film in a completely different direction for the sake of his desired plot.

Those are all small potatoes. What about Rey’s lineage? Snoke’s origin? He referenced the saber toss. Rebuilt Kylo Ren’s helmet. The whole theme from TLJ about not being held to the past?

The point where they lost me and I never quite recovered was revealing that Chewie was alive like ten seconds after it happened. When Rey destroyed the ship I had my head in my hands and was just stunned. One of the most shocking moments in ANY of the movies. The idea that our hero had killed a beloved character and how they reconciled that would have had huge ramifications for the entire movie. I of course wondered if he would be alive because I doubted they would do something so difficult, but I thought it would fester for a long time before possibly being revealed later. Instead we immediately cut to Hux showing him off?!

I could almost FEEL the hand of The Mouse coming into the film and saying, “No, no, we can’t have that much tension! Everyone has to trust that he’s fine or else they might feel something negative for the briefest moment! And no you can’t hint at it, they have to SEE him so they know it’s true.” It was just completely insulting.

They couldn’t even wait until we had the, “For Chewie,” scene so that rang completely hollow when it could have been one of the most emotional scenes. Rey sensing him on the ship would have been the perfect way to reveal it in a quiet but meaningful way, but even that didn’t hit me at all.

I know in the grand scheme of things it’s a super small moment compared to being disappointed with the major themes or character development, but it was absolutely what gave me the most visceral reaction on first watch.

  15. I found that ridiculous as well. And bringing back C3PO after he had that goodbye
No stakes at all. No reason to worry.

The use of ”they’re dead; no they’re alive!” in this was absurd.

They are small potatoes, you're right. I just feel as though J.J. had a lot to tie up, and we know he leans into fan service more than subverting of expectations, so it was a no brainer that he'd make a completely different film to Johnson. Tonally and as a Star Wars movie.

I think the 180's he did in regards to TLJ aren't a "fuck you Johnson", more a "I've gotta get this plotline closed and I've gotta do it quickly and with fan service."

    Two random thoughts:

For a second I thought Palps was going to go all Voldemort and talk through that snake or something.

I think Rey should have actually killed Chewy there... That moment was just so gut wrenching and powerful and then it was erased a few minutes later

Dominic Monaghan appearing in the support cast was extremely pleasant. Loved him for years.

  20. Did Carrie Fisher film anything for this or was it all from the prior films? Thought it worked well.

Palpy has enough lightning to light up the entire rebel fleet and then can't get enough to fry Rey???

    I fucking loved this.

    cried a few times.

I was genuinely surprised about a few major things, and I thought overall, JJ did the best with what he had. It felt like Star Wars, and it was fun.

    Can’t that be enough?

She had the light on her side, as well as "all the Jedi". Light beats dark. Light beats bad guy. Hero wins.
