I didn't ask anyone to convince me to watch it, I asked if it was worth watching. You see, a lot of things that get attention aren't necessarily good, and I'd prefer to watch things that are good rather than things that aren't. So I decided to ask my chorus.fm friends if this thing I only knew from twitter memes was good or not good

Well for one, that isn't what I said. I said the attention it's received made me curious. But more importantly: it's disingenuous to make the absolutely banal claim that an out of context clip could make someone curious about a movie? That's just ridiculous

Thanks for the rec, I'll check it out

Laughing at a meme is irony poisoning, got it. And I'll try to fix the laziness of my posts next time around, whatever the fuck that means

@Marx&Recreation You asked if it was worth watching and said you wouldn’t want to outside of it being skewered on social media which seems like you’re saying you’d want to watch it only out of some morbid curiosity

That being said, my post was bad. I’m just so annoyed with people hating on this film because of a 30 second clip floating around Twitter with zero context. I think it’s genuine and moving and people should give it a chance rather than letting it be some viral punching bag

I've literally thought about the piano bar scene every day since seeing Marriage Story

I haven't seen anyone make fun of the fight scene except people in this forum talking about other people making fun of the fight scene.

I've mentioned this before, but this is generally why I don't like to see films like this get major press and awards notices, because the worst types of film viewers descend upon it. I can only imagine what the reaction to Uncut Gems will be. Back in the days of Greenberg movie theaters were putting up warning signs to audiences who thought they were walking in to another Ben Stiller comedy.

It's a double-edged sword; casting Darth Vader Jr. and Black Widow gets you a much bigger budget and more press (it would be more distribution if it wasn't a Netflix film), but you attract people who don't want to engage critically with the work being put in front of them.

Or stop caring what random people, who are just a loud minority, say about things you like. It’s easy, for the most part, to just not read and dwell on them.

I mean movies have always been cultural discussion pieces, it’s not ridiculous to care about how people talk about them and frustrated by the way film discourse has changed with social media and the negative effects of Disney/Marvel/Star Wars on the market

If it’s causing so much stress or anxiety then I’d recommend not doing it. That’s all I’m saying.

Like Morrissey said above, the people making fun of Marriage Story with an out of context clip is something I’ve never heard of outside of this forum, along with 99% of complaints about how film twitter reacts to things. But it’s like, don’t follow those people or go looking for their tweets to just get angry about.

It’s good to have discussion with open minded people who are being genuine but they’re clearly not, so why focus on them so much?

900 films came out this year and you didn't hear about most of them. Whether it is marketing or word-of-mouth, you are affected by culture.

I don’t follow anyone who makes fun of Marriage Story, but then someone comes in here talking about how they want to watch the movie because everyone is dunking on it, so I mean, it crosses your path whether or not you want ignore it

I was at a party on Saturday. College-educated people in their thirties and forties. People talked more about a Star Wars movie that isn't even out yet than any other movie.

Adam Driver does hit the wall in a funny way. I thought that prior to seeing the memes

Haha yeah, great scene but that hit felt like stop motion or something

On the other side of that discourse, though, I am finding it super annoying how many people are patronizing and telling others who don't like the film that they must have never been in a real relationship before lol.

    What’s wrong with that?

This sounds elitist and condescending. Just because they’re college educated means they can’t get excited over a series of movies they grew up with for 20, 30, 40+ years?

Also, you can absolutely make fun of the fight scene and still like the movie. The people taking the fight out of context as a reason to not watch the film are silly, though. I think that stemmed from the one tweet from a Marvel stan about how SJ and Adam Driver "invented acting" with that scene, or whatever.

It’s like being at your big extended family Christmas. 98% of the people there probably aren’t film fans in that they don’t see everything they possibly can. Most people probably only see like 2-3 movies a year.

It’s as stupid as getting mad that they said something like Taken or Mad Max or Fast and Furious when you ask what their favorite movie of the 2010’s were. They’re not going to say Holy Motors or The Tree of Life, haha

The discussion at the party I went to Friday was about Queen & Slim and the anticipation for Little Women so it wasn’t too bad

Mad Max doesn't deserve to be compared to those films.
