    !!!!

I feel that about Mitski to be honest. I think she is very talented and but i don't feel her. if she comes by again with good support, I'll see it live and see if that changes things.

I just find it odd to attempt to take down one of the more influential queer, female artists in the scene as being "derivative" and "uneventful", whatever that means. I'd suggest you read this article and then talk again about how she's not doing anything important or influential for tons of people out there.

Julien Baker on Being Queer, Southern, Christian, and Proud | Pitchfork

Say you're not interested or you don't get down with the music or whatever, but the words you used are pretty odd considering how powerful her message has been and how influential she's been for a ton of people.

Let me preface this by saying I like Julien Baker, but how does this have anything to do with the claim you're responding to? You can be an inspiring figure and write boring, generic ass music at the same time.

"Boring" and "Generic" are definitely not as loaded of words as "uneventful, derivative, and tries too hard to be serious", which take on a meaning of inauthenticity or faux-sincerity, which doesn't really sit well with me.

I find her music uneventful, not the cultural conversation around it. I'm not trying to rebuke you for finding solace and beauty in her tunes and all she is doing, nor am I saying she's inauthentic. I find the melodies drab, trying to add weight to her words in ways that don't work. I just don't feel it. I'll continue to keep my eye on her, though. She's an interesting figure for sure.

I think you might be reading into it a little bit, with all due respect. Not to mention there's a difference between the lyrical content and the music itself - and all of those terms can fairly be applied to the latter.

lol I mean I literally read what was said and took it at face value, not much to look into

Well, everyone brings their own slant to what they read. You have a very personal attachment to Baker, so yeah, you read into my comments. It's fine. We're through it.

Still Fly (Devil Wear Prada) is the best cover out of the whole punk/pop goes catalog.

you read the comments as literally "music" like instruments? That's just a weird way to take the statement.

Regardless, I stand by my point that she's a weird artist to target with words like "uneventful" or "trying too hard". I'm not a female and I'm not queer but I can still find immense power in her work.

The Punk Goes Crunk tape is probably the worst thing to happen in pop punk music, like, ever.

White read them the way I intended them, if that means anything. Though I though I clarified "uneventful" and "trying too hard?" You are applying all my criticism to her lyrics specifically. I don't want to get in a fight with you or come off like I'm trying to dissuade anyone from grooving to her tunes and appreciating her unique personal presence in the industry. I am talking strictly of my experience of her music.

I just find it hard to separate the lyrics on her album from the music. The music itself doesn't really stick out to me on the album and I think that's an intentional choice, the bare bones instruments coupled with the raw emotion in her voice/the lyrics lends more weight to each song. Obviously you think differently, I'd just suggest you sit down with the lyrics and reassess what uneventful means.

No specific element of her music was mentioned, and so I'd read "music" as the sum of all of its parts and the overall sound, stylistically speaking, produced as a result. If he'd singled out just her lyrics or her message (which are two separate things anyway), I wouldn't be writing this post right now.

I think if a statement was made like "Kendrick Lamar's music is boring, uneventful, derivative, and tries too hard to be serious." I'd definitely find some weird meaning in there rather than the post being about anti-G Funk propaganda. Obviously I'm misinterpreting what the original poster meant per his (or her) explanation, but I think that's more on the fault of the original post and not my interpretation.

Her album is a non-event for me. Not a very good album, IMO. So yeah, uneventful. Not uneventful for you though. That's cool.

Okay how can an album be a non-event? By virtue of the fact that you listened to an album means an event occurred. Fuuuuuck let's just dig in and have a philosophical discussion about the nature of time now.

Like I said, weird word choice once again. Discussion wouldn't happen if you simply said you didn't like the album. Throwing around "uneventful" or "non-event" has connotations of it being meaningless, b! You're reaching into that thesaurus too much and muddling your point!!!
