It's insane...I essentially had the same 65-inch Samsung Smart TV that I bought in the fall of 2015...that was $1,200.

They're way cheaper now but the catch is, I don't think they're meant to last that long anymore.

I'm in the market for a new tv and almost picked up that Samsung 55" at Best Buy for $279 (I think). Maybe I should just do it

You're also looking at older technology. If you want to spend the $1200+ that you did years ago, you need to start looking at OLED TVs with HDR, 240 motion, etc.

aren't the things on sale for Black Friday purposefully made with cheaper quality?

Thanks, that helps. How noticeable is HDR? Feels like most of the TVs listed say that the HDR was ineffective.

Often, yes. So much so that - as my wife and I discovered a few years back - if, say, every HDMI port was fried during an electrical storm then it would be essentially impossible to fix because there are no parts to replace the circuit board due to it being so specifically manufactured only for a Black Friday sale.

    Fun stuff.

@colorlesscliche from what I’ve been able to find, D+ doesn’t have an actual in-app subtitles option. You just have to turn on closed captioning from the Roku settings.

  11. I've found in app subtitles in my TV app for it

I used that, seems to be fine. The web based D+ does have it though.

I was checking just for Roku. Where were they on yours?

  15. So if you are watching the show and get to where you want to pause or fast forward, there is actually an icon at the top of the screen you can select that has the options for subtitles. I'll take a picture when I get home.

Oh yeah mine doesn’t have that. It just has the title at the top and the time remaining bar at the bottom.

This may be true for some of the shittier/off brands but I know, at least with the Samsung ones I purchased yesterday, they've been around since 2018...they are just being marked down for the holiday (and honestly, they weren't even marked down that much from the original price). It's not like they were specifically made for a Black Friday deal. I did look at the ratings for the ones I purchased. Both had a 4.6 ratings with 1800+ reviews

But as @colorlesscliche mentioned earlier, you could certainly avoid the deals and splurge on a much more expensive television these days...They're not all cheaper, but for the most part, most TVs now are reasonable prices unless you are looking for ALL the bells and whistles (which for the common buyer, they are probably not).
