Interesting. Been a big fan of Grayscale's previous albums but this one was a 7 to me. Not listened to the others so I'll look them up!

Nella Vita is sitting in my top three. I just love the stark contrast between the pop sound and how dark the lyrical themes are. I relate to them as well so that might help!

Can vouch so much for Emarosa and especially Copeland (my AOTY). Might not be your preferred genre, though.

I also like the new Jimmy Eat World (and blink 182) quite a bit.

It's not that I think it's bad, it just isn't hugely my kind of sound. It will be in my top 20 though for sure.

Errrrm, I mean I LOVED PV, and GN was great, but this one hasn't really clicked for me yet.

Love the new Jimmy Eat World. Was really not into the new Blink though sadly.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve not been paying as much attention this but I feel this years not had as many amazing albums for my tastes.

I think it's an odd year because there haven't been that many AMAZING albums but there are a ton of good ones.

    This is how I feel.

If i look at ones I rated 6-7, so what I consider enjoyable and good but not something I'll really keep going back to regularly, there is tons of it. It's a lack of brilliant records that has been noticeable.

I also heard one of my least favourite records in memory this year so I guess there is that lol.

Oh I have heard some BAD records this year but I won't drag their name through the mud.

  12. Agree with the discussion regarding a lot of good records this year and not many great ones. I'm going to have a hard time making an EOTY list because I have 5-6 records that have really grabbed me this year and then a bunch of stuff that I enjoyed but never really separated from the pack.

@disambigujason has given me Pine - Pine for this week’s CMCS which I was really excited to dive into. Pine are a band unknown to myself that seem to have such a depth to their fan base that cultivates a heavy release as part of their small scene. They have given us a record about change and feeling that makes for a standout record that pushes these songs onto another plane of musical therapy.

I’m not familiar with any of the band's previous work, if any, but the structure of these songs coupled with the lyricism throughout this record are the standout feature and the harmonic moments add to the overall vibe that allows this record to really breathe with real and raw sophistication. It’s evident that Pine are a band with talent that they focus on bringing to life throughout every key.

The record may also be many people’s first introduction to the band but this shouldn’t deter from the lush, and beautiful, feat that Pine have managed to produce. The layered vocals that reverberate with rhythm and construction are the quintessential elements of Pine’s sound. They create a melodic painting that is accessible and full of expression, constructed by filling layers of alternative rock that acts straightforward but little cracks of alluring vibrant sounds are seeping out.

Throughout the record the band flexes their unique and timbering groove, draining their delivery with bustling sound that leads to an immensely beautiful ending. Pine has pushed their song-writing skills, starting with buried vocals that thunder the foundations of the canvas they have created. A dire picture of grief and darkness evolving the band even further from the sea of abundant sound that blankets Pine.

It’s genuinely exciting to experience Pine with such new ears and can conclude it is undeniably haunting yet beautiful. Here we have a release backed by the best of the band in a production that sustains the genre that I hope to see more of in the future.

Going in, I didn’t know what to expect from this album. I had heard the band compared to ADTR before, and in some ways I can still hear that, but I was kind of surprised how much more pop punk this album was compared to my preconceived notions. That being said, each song has this cool way of starting off absolutely pop punk or restrained, and then exploding with some hardcore goodness. The album has a great flow to it, each song playing into the other and transitioning very well. There weren’t really any breaks in between songs or any chances to catch your breath, and the band completely did that on purpose (and succeeded). Clocking in at 30 minutes, the album is over before you know it. When you listen to this, you’re in it for the long haul but its over quickly and you kind of want to hit repeat right away.

A lot of these songs have moments you can appreciate. Gang vocals (especially in the title track), grinding guitars, and a very fast paced mentality even in its slower moments give this album some bite. There’s also some very brutally honest lyric work going on here, especially in the title track and my personal favorite, ‘An Old Book Misread’. These are probably the two songs on the album I’ve gone back to the most, and the lyrics especially in the later song are huge moments for me on this album.

If I had any complaints on the album, it would be the vocals sometimes feel a bit out of tune and a bit more spoken singsong than I am used to, but that is solely because of my own personal preferences and nothing that I will be faulting the band or this album over. It’s odd, the album has one foot in my wheel house and one foot out of it, so it was an enjoyable ride that showed me some familiar yet but often delved into sounds in the genres I listen to. They do an excellent job of blending the pop punk sound and the hardcore sound they’re going for. it can be a bit jarring for those unfamiliar or unacquainted, but it has to be respected.

    8/10

    standout tracks:
    Mutiny!
    An Old Book Misread
    Dead Men Tell No Tales
    To Be Continued
    This Very Moment

  22. This The Dirty Nil album I'm currently listening to and reviewing... wow is all I can say so far.

As for 2019, I think it's already one of my favorite years in music. Making a top 10 is going to be so tough.

  23. @Michael Schmidt and i exchanged records and I got Master Volume by The Dirty Nil, a Canadian punk rock band formed in 2006. This one is actually their second full-length, released in 2018, though they’ve got various releases over the last decade.

I had seen their name a few times on chorus.fm over the last three years but this is my first time listening to them and it’s safe to say I’m already a fan!

If I could describe their sound by using the good old RIYL method, it’s kind of a mix of early I Am The Avalanche, PUP, and even The Bronx’s rockier stuff at times. Punk rock with slight power pop influences would be somewhat close I guess?

The songwriting is top notch, bouncing between rock’n’roll-y power chords and bluesy riffs, while each chorus is meant to be sung at a stadium. Honestly, the anthemic aspect is what draws me to this album the most. It’s not only well written, it also instantly stays in your head. I already know I’m going to spin this one a lot the rest of the year and for the ones to come.

I especially loved That’s What Heaven Feel Like and Pain Of Infinity, coincidentally the songs that give me the most a I Am The Avalanche vibe. Please, Please Me took me by surprise and is one hell of a banger. Hearing it felt like I was driving a cadillac at full speed in the middle of a chase scene from a 80’s movie. Spoiler: I would crash the car and be caught as the outro plays out… yeah, that’s how much I connected to it.

Always High stood out as well due to the Small Brown Bike feel during the verses. I want to highlight Smoking Is Magic just because of its urgency, its main riff being my favorite of the entire record, and the last minute going so hard! Evil Side is a nice refresher that slows it down a little and builds up to a noisy climax. I couldn't think of a better way to close this quite high energy album.

Thanks for the discover again @Michael Schmidt, and I’m excited to dive into their discography, standalones singles and obscure splits included!

The Dirty Nil are just so fun.

There is no pretentiousness there, they just write super catchy, anthemic, well written rock songs that sort of channel Weezer and PUP.

I Don't Want That Phone Call is one that really stands out to me, alongide Bathed In Light.
